4-eyed gadwall, Anat's got 20 years of wisdom on you and I - he's been around and I totally agree with him. I especially noted his title - out of respect. Most good duck hunters that spend their time scouting know where some decent public holes are. The reason they are decent instead of great are because out of those good hunters, some aren't good at keeping a secret or just don't care. I'll gladly listen to anybody talk about their hole, but like most folks I sure don't want my favorite public holes talked about. Jesse, you're not going to lose any business by keeping quiet. Your more likely to gain business from some newcomer who doesn't know all the public spots. Personally, I plan to hunt both public and private. And I sure do like the notion of having some nice public spots when I go, preferably a limit of greenheads, a pintail, and maybe a gadwall (I'm not picky am I?) P.S. Jesse, you keep talking about your honey holes. When are ya gonna take an old high school buddy hunting?

thank god my uncle farms and leaves me a little flooded areas to hunt . i would quit if i had to hunt public after seeing these posts. it is hard enough to keep people out of the farm and shooting over our spot to see what gets up. it must be like a circus on public land!!!!!!!!!

If I'am gonna take some SOB hunting with me they better be on my side.
And until you've hunted the same spot on the same public area about everyday of the season for about 7 years strait you will never understand my point.
P.S. Chris you are welcome anytime. I look forward to seeing you. Its been a long time.

I have always been a little perplexed about people complaining that there is too much competition and pressure on public lands. What they are really saying is that there is too much pressure on places that are easy to get to. I do a good bit of hunting on public land, but most of the places I hunt require a great deal of scouting and are somewhat remote. I usually try to find areas that require a 1/2 to 3/4 mile walk. This eliminates most of the competition. There are tens of thousands of public acres. Do your homework, put in the effort and you can hunt in relative solitude.

Professor,
I will say this about hunting Public land and will only say this once.
You can bust your butt to and find a hole that is almost too much work to get to. If you start killing birds or if you shoot a lot because of multiple people in your group. Sooner or later there will be someone that is listening to your shots and moving ever so close to you until finally they are on top of you. Then it becomes an issue if they are too close. However if they hunt a respectful distance then being public you shouldn’t say a thing. First come first serve on public land plain and simple.
Where and only when you should have an issue is when they put you in harms way by being close enough to blister you with shot.
This is when I make sure they understand they are too close, Some people understand this and move on and others will continue to be non-sportsman because they have the right to hunt public land regardless of whom ever else may be there.
What many of our youth need to understand is that hunting is not a right it is a privilege. I have the privilege to hunt and the right to be safe doing it.
Rights don't come into it until you start stepping on the rights of others or them on yours.

Most of the public places that I hunt down here I never see another hunter. That is because I have done like Prof. says, and scoured the area for hard to get to spots. However, were I to run my mouth about where I am hunting, you would not believe the number of folks that would show up. I have even had them try to follow me from the boat ramp sometimes.

R, nice post. Good luck to you this year. I'm sure you have everything all scouted out already and know there to get em'. I'll see you down there when i come back home for Xmas to keep em' stirrin the week after Xmas. Well, today was opening morning our or duck season in Okalhoma, and I'll have to say this was public hunting at it's absolute best. Since I am a major fan of hunting with my own dog, I was a bit disturbed from the beginning when i met the guys to head to the river and saw that there were 6 guys and 4 dogs...what a cluster i was thinking...so, I graciously left my dog at home as did another and we set out at 4am. Yes, six guys going to hunt over the same spread....yes, that is what i was thinkin..., not to mention the fact that when we got to the ramp there were 18 trucks/boats already out in the water. Well, shooting time was 6:15 and at about 6:12 and pitch black due to heavy cloud cover birds starting hitting the blocks. there were probably 50 birds in the blocks when we called the first shot....the rest was history....at 6:35 we counted our 36th duck of the morning. Yes, 6 of us killed 6 limits in 20 minutes....and all of this in 64 degree weather on PUBLIC WATER...What an opening morning i will not forget.
Good luck to you .....
Take care.
