Bicycling on the trace
My parents taught me to get out of the way of a passing car or I would get hit if I ride in the street. I have a tag on my truck and pay taxes for driving on the roadways. A four wheeler cannot ride on the street. Its hard to pass on the trace anyway and the bicycles make it very hard. They should ride on the left side and GET OUT OF THE WAY OF ONCOMING CARS!
I know I will probably be blasted for this post but it's just my rant!

Re: Bicycling on the trace
Somehow, those bikers have gotten the idea that the Trace is a bike path.
One of 'em is gonna get hit, and it's gonna leave a mark!!!

Re: Bicycling on the trace
You are right on, they act like they own the road and should have to have a tag to ride on the road like that.
I used to get so mad over that, they know you have come up behind them and they still make no effort to get over on the shoulder to let a vehicle go by.
It is just a matter of time before one of them gets hit and killed. I hope it doesnt happen but I bet it will.

Re: Bicycling on the trace
When you ride a bike on a roadway its required that you travel in the same direction as all other traffic, you are to ride to the right side of the lane as close to the edge of that lane as possible. Riding on a sidewalk is against the law.

Then they should find a wider road or a get some of that spending package to pay for a bike path next to the Trace.

this topic is comparable to the people who kayak down the river channel in the upper pearl on the rez. I almost killed 4 of em one day coming around a curve at 60mph.

Re: Bicycling on the trace
The Mississippi Code does not apply to The Natchez Trace as it is a Federal Park. If you look on the web site for the Trace you will see it is designated as a bike trail by the Feds.
The main purpose of the Natchez Trace Park is not to be a highway. Sorry, but the bikers win this argument.

Re: Bicycling on the trace
Say a guy that has had just been hit one day coming home from turkey hunting. One of his fellow bikers smacked the 80 year old man driving the car that hit him. The guy doing the smacking had taken a check out of the 80 year olds shirt pocket to get his name and address and the 80yo wasn't having it. anyway, to make a long story longer, the park ranger got there and said the bikers have the rite of way and got on the old man's booty..
oy yeah, i had just killed my biggest turkey of my life that morning

Why is my mouth so dry this morning, when I drank so much last night?
Re: Bicycling on the trace
Well if your on the trace your complaining is out of luck. We ride the trace every once and a while down near Rocky Springs. But on county roads we ride every week and have never had a problem with traffic. We usually are in a pace line and ride on the left hand side of the road. If we are not in a pace line and are just up and shooting the bull while riding if someone sees a car coming they yell carback and we adjust fairly quickly to let the car pass.

In Baton Rouge about 8 or 9 years ago a group of cyclists were hit by a drunk on River Road (road that parallels the MS River Levee and frequent route for cycling). If memory severes me, he hit 8 or 9 people, several of which died and the others were seriously injured.

you do realize that many of your fellow ms duckers ride bikes for fitness and training, right? i'm sure these aren't the ones you speak of since we all have the uttmost in common sense and cognative thinking to know that in a bout between any motor vehical and a bike that the bike loses every time, so respect is given to traffic. the ones that pizz you (and me off too) are the eltitst cyclist who think they own the entire lane and that you, in your 2 ton chunk of metal hurling down the road at more than twice their speed toward their sub-25lb chunk of exquisit aluminium or titanium or carbon fiber work of art, will just have to deal with and get over it... like peewee said, those groups with common sense ride defensively and respect traffic.

Re: Bicycling on the trace
Folks have some respect for the cyclists. I plan on getting into it soon and would surely appreciate it. Also remember that the cyclist you might nip with your mirror or blow off the road and injure just might be a surgeon or doctor that can save your life or the life of a family member one day but not if you injure them and take away their career. And be patient! No need to be in a hurry anyway. But that's another rant entirely. Now the jackholes that ride 3 or more wide should return the respect and single file in heavier traffic.
