Lab Question?

Postby champcaller » Mon Dec 22, 2003 3:52 pm

I have a lab I bought as a pup 3 years ago. She is an awesome dog!! Comes from a good bloodline and she has been to training school. She knows how to sit stay lay and retrieve. When she was a little trained last year I took her out because she was doing so well in the field and at my lake. When I took her to go hunting she would not do anything she was told. She is not a hyper dog at all. Just when I took her out. Anything y'all know of I can do. Or is it too late to start training her again? I want to get her on the whistle and get to start retrieving those ducks. I know she has the potential. But is it too late? And if not could someone help me out with some pointers on training an older dog that would be awesome! :!: Thanks

Champcaller,

Send Micah a PM and see if he will move this post over to the Gun Dog Forum.

What do you mean by she did not do anything she was told? Without knowing more my guess is that a good basic obedience foundation was not set or the dog has been allowed to do as she pleases. Good obedience is not taught by kicking rover til they comply, but through repetition with patience being key as well.

If you were not talking about obed issues then post up what the problems were.

Its too late for this duck season... and its too late for her to ever reach her full poteitnal, but its not too late for her to make a duck dog.

She does ok in the yard, and the field ya train in all the time. She didnt hunting. That means her ob isnt solid, lab luvr is right on. Sit means sit, first time every time. Ya start in a controlled environment, and add distractions. Get excited about it now, and tell yourself your gonna have a dog come next duck season. Find a training program you like, you think you can stick too, and start from puppy stuff and go from there. Somethings will go quickly, because she already knows, and somethings will drrrraaaagggggg, because she already has bad habits to overcome. travis

Lab Question

champcaller-

We're gonna have to actually kill some ducks before Belle can go get 'em. Had a good time Monday, let's do it again Saturday (and shoot a little better this time around).
