Don't Teach Your Kids About Hunting!
Don't Teach Your Kids About Hunting!
I've been on the deer stand a lot here lately. I have had time to think, so here goes. You know, our kids will see the loss of the RIGHT to hunt and harvest game in their lifetime. I can see it happening everyday! It's like those times we see an accident about to happen and we can't speak or move even though we try. It appears to me to be hopeless; we better enjoy the short time we have left w/ our guns and the RIGHT...
I beleive there is a coalition of enemies to our heritage. They are working together against our heritage and I don't know if they even realize they are doing this. But, it seems their goals and philosophies seem to work in unison against us. These "enemies" have slowly prompted our society to look at our basic RIGHT as a ghoolish privilege that the State ought to rescind. You know there is a difference in a right and a privilege. We see hunting as a basic right of mankind, but they see it as a privilege that can be taken by the govt.
So, here are the reasons/evidence that scares me--
(REMEMBER- the enemies are unknowingly working together!)
1.The insatiable appetite of the Game and Wildlife profession to REGULATE the hunter/fisherman. Every freaking season they come up w/ some new hoop for us to jump thru. TELCHEK and "duck tags" are tyranny!!!! These numb nuts are working a deal w/ Cellular South so we can call in from the field. Gee, I wonder who Dr. Polles has his cellular service with?
2. The animal rights people...well, we all know they are idiots. I don't need to elaborate here. At least these folks are honest about their intentions.
3. Gun control advocates want your guns!! They will work w/ ANY cause that will deminish the number of hunters. It is HUNTERS who have kept the right to bear arms safe so far, but the number of people who hunt is decreasing thanks to duck tags, TELCHEK, HIP cerification, et al... As the number of gun customers decreases, the less power the industry has...
4. Worst of all, we live in a society that is out of touch w/ our basic way of life prior to the last 75 years. There was a time when "killing" to eat was NORMAL. What you didn't kill, you grew from the soil. But now we are so far from that...idiots of our day actually think their food comes from the shelf in Kroger. Run a survey at work and see how many people recoil at hunting, dressing and cooking a wild animal or actually have a garden. Since the masses don't see life at it's most basic reality, society has backslidden. WE ARE IN THE MINORITY NOW.
So, don't teach your kids... they'll get their hearts broken...
Somebody please prove me wrong. Say something that will encourage me. My kids just went thru their hunter education course. They want to go w/ me every trip. Is it better for them to never know the joys we know...?

Don't teach them to hunt because there are those that oppose it? How many other rights are you willing to surrender so that they don't "get their hearts broken" if someone is successful in getting them taken away? That's just silly. Do what you can to preserve those rights and pass that heritage along to your children. Why rob your children of important things just because they may have to fight harder than you did to keep them? Teach them to stand up to keep their heritage. Don't surrender for them.
go24,
You are right in the regard there are organizations out there that want to take away your privilege to hunt. Hunting is a privilege and not a right. I can promise you that the MDWFP wants to insure your privilege to hunt. We are trying to prepare for the future when the anti-hunting crowd challenges us on hunting. "Why is hunting needed biologically?", they will ask. A biologist can give the text book reasons on why it is needed, but we will need proof for them. That same proof will also help us better manage our wildlife in a specific area/region rather than just "statewide" as we do now. Tele-check is one way of getting there. By your post I would bet you haven't received good information on Tele-check, HIP or "duck tagging". I could type more than most people would want to read on these programs that you feel like are making a hardship on the hunters, so give me a call @ 601-540-5783. I will gladly discuss any of these topics with you. I am one that believes there is always room for improvement. You may be able to offer suggestions on how to make and initiate any improvements. I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,

1.The insatiable appetite of the Game and Wildlife profession to REGULATE the hunter/fisherman. Every freaking season they come up w/ some new hoop for us to jump thru
And who can forget the time they outlawed punt guns and sinkboxes????
Or maybe the time they outlawed using live ducks as decoys.
Or what about the time they put the limit of wood ducks at 2 to prevent them from becoming almost extinct...AGAIN.
Or one of the most recent ones when they closed Can season b/c the numbers were low...or dropping the limit on bills to 3, or pintails to 1 and 30 days?
Or should we just be allowed unlimited access to every natural resource we have and see them go the way of the passenger pigeon?
Come on man, the game and fish folks aren't out to do us in. We need some regulation, or redneck night hunters and skillet shooters will ruin it for us all.
Yeah, there seems to be much political motivation to alot of game laws, but it's mostly for good. We could go back to the points system

Don't give up man....turn the tide. Get out there and become active with ALL of the kids...not just our own. The ones that need reaching are the ones who have absolutely no access to hunting/fishing. Can you believe that my dad wasn't a hunter...because his dad wasn't a hunter? If it weren't for someone inviting me hunting when I was 12, who knows what I'd think about hunting now. Yikes!
I challenge each of us on this board to take 2 kids on youth weekend this year. Some of them have never seen the sun rise. They don't care if 2 ducks come in or 2000. They don't care if they shoot a mallard or a merganser. They don't care if you blow a Haydel or a cocacrylic crystal blue meth mallard mangler cut-down reacher. They just need somebody to take them.
What if every kid we take, that never has hunted or been remotely introduced to hunting, grows up to be avid hunters like we are? The results would be amazing!

Last year I took my two oldest hunting one afternoon. They had a ball riding though the timber in the boat. They got in a calling contest against each other(they actually sounded better than the twerp I heard calling this past saturday). They helped set out and pick up decoys and had fun doing it. We didn't even fire the gun and they had a ball.
Now, when legal hours ended I sheathed my gun and told the boys to watch. The ducks(90% woodies) started pouring in. I ain't talking about 40-50. We let about 3000 ducks fall into a 5 acre roost hole. Ducks were hitting the water 10 feet from the boat. The boys eyes were huge. They were utterly amazed at the sight. I then explained why we didn't shoot them, what would happen to us and the ducks if we shot them. I also explained why we have to take care of something that we plan on killing. I know it was a little early for a 7yr old and a 4 yr old to fully comprehend, but its never to early to start. I plan on having plenty of refresher courses over the years. I want their sons to be able to witness the same sights and plan to do what is in my power to ensure that.

Thanks guys for the comments and encouragement. I'm going to keep hunting, voting, and teaching my kids, but I know in my heart it's only a matter of time until we lose... Hopefully it will be a LONG time...
SB/Wingman, if I understand your responses, you think I'm off base on the "regulation" premise that I laid out. Maybe I have gone overboard. I'm not against regulating hunting/fishing, I know that is a must in the day in which we live. The position I hold is that some of this is unnecessary and worrisome. You probably feel differently. BUT, there's no doubt that more regulations=less people hunting. Furthermore, I'm saying that this is JUST ONE of the circumstances undermining man's basic right to feed his family (W/O the help of Kroger).
You and I are hard core; we will hunt every year. But, some take it in spurts. They may not hunt one year for a number of reasons, but the day comes that they get the fever again, head off the wallyworld to by licenses, and BAM the guy says "Are you HIP certified, blah blah blah...". The next day he's talking w/ some buddies and they mention TELECHEK. He says, "DUH, what's telechek?" Well, you see where I'm going... Is all this stuff a necessary evil? Maybe so.
SB, thanks again for being willing to post your phone # and the offer to hear me out. You are a good guy I can tell. I've said all I know to say. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

After the RIGHT is taken away, who will watch me to make sure i dont hunt, since the game wardens wont have a job.
Ill hunt, regardless.
When THEY come to get my guns (such as in Austraila) I will bury them;"what guns, I sold those things years ago".
If you got land, you will hunt. We may all go to bow and arrow, but, we will hunt.

Take a look at some of those figures: the white-tail population has climbed from less than 7500 animals in the 40's to 1.7 million today.
Look at the turkey numbers.
Some regulation is good..it's necessary. Yep, alot of it seems like a huge hassle and a waste of time, but I've got to believe there are folks out there like Ramsey and Scott that know what they're doing. If it means following their rules, instead of what I perceive as the truth, then that's what it takes sometimes.
Personally, it's hard for me to understand why the limit on specks is 2, when I routinely ride by flocks of 300-1000 all the time up here. But I suppose somebody knows the whole story so I won't argue...much.
