I really don't know what to say! I have never seen mallards feed at night this long after a full moon. The phase seems to of effected all ducks but shovelers.
What in the world is a pintail doing going down in a slough or cypress brake!

The fields are a joke! Unless you want shovelers.

To have any success I think you need to hunt the roost in the morning!

Something's fishy... I can't even kill a woody anymore. I've always been able to go to a beaver slough over here and bust woodies coming in for the roost, BUT not this year. I've set till WAY dark and they ain't coming! You can go back in the morning and there they are. I don't know what time they are getting home, but it's awfully late!!!

Delta Duck,
We have had a large number of pintails just falling into the decoys everyday and it is so hard not to take a shot at them.

Hunting is slow here too, but some new birds moved in I think. After getting skunked on specks yesterday morning...and watching mallards fall into the duck hole about a 1/4 mile down, we went back to ducks this am. Nothing but singles and pairs in the air early, and hardly any of them would work. Out of the blue at about 7:30 a flock of no less than 200 mallards comes in from the north and bombs us! (Haven't seen that in 3 years). After we volleyed, they all left and never returned.

But we worked specks all morning long with no goose dekes! Go figure.

weather

Big cold fronts not coming regularly enough. Every time we get a good blue northerner, we get an influx of new ducks. We shoot em till they disappear. See less and less every morning. Still a better start than the last two years.

For it to be getting worse, implies that it was good earlier. I hunted flooded timber yesterday and we had woodies but only 3-4 mallards of which we took a greenhead. So, 5 hunters only 4 ducks taken. Of course the 'ole mudsucker needs some shooting lessons in timber with wood ducks as this is my first year to hunt timber. Not alot seen on three weekends I have been. Got called in early from camp as my Wife is sick. So I hope you boys have better luck today!

Anybody know what size shot works best for mosquitos? I heard they work out OK in gumbo and I might have to take to shooting them.

COME ON WEATHERMAN! Get this right! Repeat after me, "Cold and wet. Freeze warning! Cold and wet..." PLEEEEEASE!!

Hunting over here in North Alabama was good but........

Postby billjohnson » Sun Dec 21, 2003 7:04 pm

a lot of our ducks left last Thursday and a few teal have come in but no big ducks. Sounds like plenty of them in the timber next to our place but the State would really frown on me hunting  We need some serious hard cold and we will be in them again. Can't really complain. We have killed our share, considering it's not even Christmas yet. It's lack of water boys in the MS Delta. No doubt about it! We are just lucky to have a 69,000 hole of water (Guntersville Lake) to holdem and on flight days if you have the spot you kill them. I hunt the Delta too and am dying for a Blue Norther! Chin up Lads! It'll happen.

Slow in Bolivar county fields for me too....Lots of grays...Hollywoods and Ringnecks......with a rare greenhead...( As the Duck Commander sez...Dem Gray ducks aint got no bugs !)

Ive seen the press releases that tell us about all the ducks down south....but I will be darn if Ive seen em yet !!

Not as bad as last year so far, but pretty mediocre at best....When is it gonna get cold, and when is it gonna rain...I dont mean 1/2 inch..I mean 4-5 inches !!

There is some good news !!! It an only get better at this point !!

Delta Duck is making a lot of sense. I have been hunting a flooded milo field the past three hunts and have seen the same thing each time. A couple thousand fatheads are roosting in the milo and then flying to bayous to raft up in the edges during the day.(I followed them yesterday to make sure)

Four limit of mallards, one goose, kids shot 5 bluebills and 3 shovelers for off ducks. (Yeah, right!)
