Pigeons
After looking at a post over on the Waterfowl Forum, this got me to thinking. How come we do not hunt pigeons here in the U.S.? We hunt and eat doves, which are of the pigeon family, but we do not hunt and eat pigeons. We use them in training for our young dogs and for older ones when prepping for dove season.
In some countries they are served in eating establishments.
So, what gives? Are they just bad tasting here?

Some of us hunt them when they're available......

when i was at ole miss i went over to some thing i think it's called "1st sunday" a couple of times over by corinth if i'm not mistaken, an bought a crate or two of pigeons. when i told the guy i was planning on eating them he almost didn't sell them to me. they weren't that bad, but a little tough. he asked me where i was from and after telling him he said "dang ya'll eat just about anything down there"

"First Monday" or Mundee if you're from around these parts. It is in Ripley, MS and takes place incidentally on the first Saturdee of each month and not the first Mundee as one might guess. And, you can buy just about any dadgum thing you want there.

You got that right! My neighbor growing up in Tupelo went one weekend and came home with a racoon. I am not sure what happened to that thing, but after the racoon was gone he came home with one of those blue foxes. He had it tied up outside and it chewed through the nylon rope he had it on and we never saw it again either.landscaper wrote:And, you can buy just about any dadgum thing you want there.

Do you all trap them? If so, what do you use as bait? I bought me a pigeon trap, but have not used it yet. My intentions were to trap for dog training.southernvaughan wrote:Pigeon is good eatin! Seriously better than a dove to me... We eat em all the time.
Re: Pigeons
They aren't a pigeon, they are a multicolored domestic dove.
Guessing you would have to trap them. Kind of hard to bring a pellet gun in a park to pop some pigeons or bring one along the sidewalk in town.

Re: Pigeons
I've shot plenty. The difficult part is finding true wild pigeons (the kind that don't live in the city). The ones that live in the city don't taste that good. Ones out in the county that you can find in old barns and structures taste fine. When I go to Saskatchewan I shoot them all the time. I shoot them off grain silos.

I eat them

Some countries serve German Shepard and grasshoppers, don't mean I want to eat one.
And If ya want to shoot them, come to my office. Shoot all ya want. I am tired of spending money on shells for them!

Re: Pigeons
I grew up shooting them in the delta from barns, silos, under bridges, etc. They taste just a little stronger than doves to me, but I like them. Best shoot I ever had was under the 2 bridges on Hwy 82 at Ft Pemberton during rush hour. Nobody even knew that my friend and I were even there. HIs dog retrieved them out of the river for us. We had a blast!
