A little help...

Postby john-q-duckhunter » Fri Dec 19, 2003 2:49 pm

Hey guys,
I'm new to this site and new to duck hunting for that matter. I've been hunting deer for a couple of years, but I see so many of those Ducks Unlimited stickers on trucks, I figured that I needed to be a duck hunter too. I got me 4 of those duck stickers from the store (didn't even have to send DU any money - but now my truck looks cool, too.) If anyone knows where I can get some of those triangle stickers with the ducks in them, I want a couple of those too.
Anyway, like I said, I am pretty new to the whole duck hunting thing, so I was hoping that you fine folks could help me out. I have a shotgun, a dozen duck decoys, a new duck call, and I got my neighbors 14 foot aluminum boat - he said that I could use it as much as I want. My problem is that I really don't know where to go. I have been a couple of times to some public places, but the folks there got pissed when I tried to follow them in my boat. I also tried waiting until daylight (so I could tell where I was going) and would park my boat at least 100 yards from other people -- nowhere close to them!!! They got pissed too. I don't understand????? I thought that you were supposed to shoot the ducks when they are landing into your decoys and nobody that I have seen has had their decoys out over 50 yards -- so why do I get yelled at for being over 100 yards from their decoys????? It's not like I am shooting at them or anything.
If someone could tell me where I can go to hunt without getting yelled at, it would certainly help me out a lot. I have a car, so I can drive to just about anywhere in the state to hunt. And if you are a hunter that wants to share some of your experience with a new comer, I have the boat and decoys - you are welcome to come hunt with me.

Thanks

Just can't stand a quiet day, can you? Tell you what, though,,,you bring that boat on over to GA and you can go down to Lake Seminole and shoot lots of those funny looking ducks that have that goofy slanted head...what do you call them...Oh, yeah, canvasbacks! You can kill a bunch of them over here.

Man, that would be fun. I don't know if I can make it all the way over to Georgia or not, though. That's super of you to offer and I will keep it in mind.
Do you ever get over to Mississippi? If so, you can come hunt with me.

After going duck hunting a couple of times, I have thought about bringing along my old 22 rifle. It's got a scope on it and I am pretty deadly on them squirrels out to about 100 yards. When the ducks sit down out in the middle, I could just use it. Would that be illegal because the 22 bullets are lead? Does anyone know if they make 22 bullets in steel shot?

Hey, John Q!

Do you have a GPS? Let me know, and I will post up the coordinates of some of my favorite spots. I can also give you the coordinates of some places that I haven't hunted, but I saw other hunters there!

Do you like to shoot coots? I do! I could always use another person so we can shoot 15 more!

Good luck!

john q,
you might as well start hunting in south carolina. the duck hunting is p#ss poor . everyone that is out there hunting is p#ssed off anyway, so making them mad really doesn't matter.

al

p.s. bring a thermos of mad dog and newspaper so you'll have something to do.

John Q

Thats a classic first post, i'll have to add that one to my favorites.
you just have to get used to thos yelling ill mannered public land duck junkies, because they really do own that land, so make sure you listen to exactly what they say. Good luck to you and shootem in the face!
