Afternoon Hunting

I would like to know what everyone thinks about hunting rice and bean fields in the afternoon. I have always heard that you shouldn't but would like to know everybodys opinion. The reason I am asking is because we are starting a new club and some people want to hunt afternoons. Let me know so I can relay the info.

Only time we shoot afternoons is when freezing up,or thawing out. Ducks will be gone in either of those condtions, so running them off shooting in afternoons is a nonissue. But other than that, don't even think about it. In fact, we wont shoot into big groups of ducks that are roosting on our ground, to keep from shooting them up. Key to consistent field shooting, leave early, roost birds close by, and when it gets right, hit em hard. travis

Travis is right on I've never hunted in the afternoon, and always heard it was a bad idea. Kill your limit in the morning, and go blast some snows or something else in season, away from the field. Then you can go again the next morning and have another good shoot. But I've always heard the quickest way to ruin a field was hunt in the afternoons, so I've never risked it.

I always try to limit out in the AM, obviously. But I don't shoot woodies. That way in the afternoon, if I have any "ducks left" for my limit, I can go to the woodie hole and shoot a couple for dinner. I would not shoot big ducks in a field in the afternoon, unless it is freezing up, or a BIG front is moving through which will push old ducks/bring new ducks anyway.

I agree with the other guys......we set a noon 'cut-off' unless everthing's 'locked-up. Only then will we hunt the afternoon if things thaw during the middle of the day.....then we stop at 2:00.

We always hunt afternoons if we don't limit in the morning. We don't have any problems "running off" any ducks either. You can always hunt a different hole in the afternoon. I have always wondered where the tradition that you aren't suppose to hunt ducks in the afternoon got started?? It's all a buncha bologna if you ask me. I have had some of the best hunts of my life in the afternoon!!

Shoot em in the afternoon and you will have plenty of ducks on the water about 30 minutes after legal shooting hours. You can shoot em all day just before frezze up or just as it thaws. Those ducks are moving anyway.

One Sunday afternoon last year about mid season my huntin buddy and I went to hunt a a field in Humphreys Cty. We had seen lots of ducks there the morning before after getting a limit elsewhere. Huge hunt! We limited out in about thirty minutes. We were so excited to watch the birds jump, fly off (still within eye site wait real good eye site) and return within minutes. We blasted em. We were hunting a corn field that had about seventeen acres covered with about eight inches of water. Wasn't flooded on purpose.

Anyway, we talked about hunting the next morning. Same spot!

Next morning. Not squat! Not even a tiny stinch of squat!

We hunted that field again next to last weekend of season (am hunt) after spotting more birds and getting some more water. Good Hunt. Left, went rabbit hunting and passed back by in the afternoon. Birds everywhere!

We didn't hunt them that afternoon. Instead we waited a few days and went back in the am.

KILLED BIRDS!

I learned a valuable lesson!

I honestly believe if you have birds on a feeding ground in the afternnon, you shouldn't hunt em till morning!

I f you have alot of ducks in your area, you probably have different birds hitting your hole's in the morning and afternoons. You were probably just running off some locals that had been in the area a while! P.s. Try hunting different holes in the morning and afternoons.

I think the only birds worth hunting in the afternoon are the woodies.

The one exception to the afternoon shoot, is if you can go with someone like bluesky and shoot his ducks out! bwhahaha. Naw, still wouldnt be worth it. travis

YOU boys that disagree with the pros yall keep busting those birds in afternoon. and while you are crying because your mornin hunt sucked. think about the Men that smashed'um.

You Ignorant Chumps, I will kill ducks in the morning or afternoon. But thats not what its all about, but you fellows have made it out to be that. Its about enjoying the outdoors and easing your mind. I always like to get to the woods and relax. It's a form of meditation. goosebruce, you have never hunted with me before in your life, or for that matter you don't even know me. So who are you to say I run off all my ducks?? What a shmuck!!!
