Report from Arkieland

Postby timberjack » Tue Dec 16, 2003 11:40 am

Well fellas, I must say that after a lackluster first half of our season I've been more than ready to bust some heads, and that's just what we did Monday morning.

I was invited to make a hunt with a good friend of mine in the Ark. delta and man am I glad I went. All we worked all morning were big, fat headed mallards that wanted to be where we were. My buddys place is a whole section of land that is completely timbered. The acorns were thick and I guess that's why the birds wanted to be there so bad. Those ducks worked all over those woods not just where we were but all his other holes as well. At one point we probably had well over 50 mallards cupped and fluttering over our dekes. It's been a while since I've seen it like that.

His policy is to get out of there by 9 am to let the ducks rest so we picked up and off we went. We carried out 20 mallards and a lone eagle head blue, by far the best hunt I've been on this season. All these other slow hunts we've made this year have almost been like, well, foreplay, leading up to the big show. I'm ready to go back.................

Timberjack, if you don't mind me asking, what part of the Arkie delta were you hunting? I have an uncle with an area that borders the White River National Refuge that I am itching to go to sometime this year. It sounds like the ducks are getting closer!
I love to watch the ducks circle and the dogs work.

Hunted timber in SE Ark this past weekend and did pretty good. 5 Friday, 8 Saturday, and 5 Sunday. Seems like a few new birds are pushing in finally. Hopefully this weekend will be even better. I may get a hunt in on Thursday, if so I'll post results.

duforester, we were huntin the flat part........

Just pullin your leg man,i guess it'd be the south part?? Anyway, our host kept tellin us these birds weren't new and believe it or not I only heard one other shot all mornin' and it could have been a deer rifle. These ducks were looking for other ducks and were hittin the woods hard in their search. They weren't shy at all but I believe that has more to do with him keeping the pressure down than anything else.............good luck

My duck camp is in Eudora, AR and they have had a good year so far but last weekend the ducks were coming in and all were flying high. Looked like a load of new ducks just in from IL. So unfortunately we did not kill but a couple ducks that day. But the ducks are heading down.

i talked with someone that hunted the 2 mornings after the split in Stuttgart at a big time club and they didnt do too well. Said all ducks that were there were local ducks. I sure did think they would be hitting it at the right time!
My goal in life is to be as good a person as my dog already thinks I am

timberjack, glad sombody's nailin' 'em. It's been an o.k. year for us but nothing like 2000-2001.

hunt4food I don't know how long you've hunted in that area, but if you weren't there for the 2000-2001 season or earlier you really missed it, everybody was killin' ducks after that ice storm. Oh, well gotta stay focused on the present! We'll talk about past season's when this one's over.

This is our first season at our duck camp in Eudora, but needless to say will not be our last. It is awesome land and an incredible camp. Some of the nicest guys you will ever meet. Check it out there might be some spots opening next year! http://www.empirelodge.com
