Who wears earplugs hunting?
Just wondering,
I only wear them target practicing but after this year Im really considering wearing them hunting...one of my buds really rang my head...dropped me to my knees it hurt so bad...I can tell i had permanent damage..sometimes my ear drum will randomly flutter...
Only thing is Im worried about is being able to hear ducks circling

I wear them, have for years, not the foam kind they work too well, can't hear the ducks with them but the red or blue baffles (I think they cost about $10-$12 and come in a clear or white plastic case), you can still hear the ducks pretty well but don't get you bells rung

Find new buddies!!!
Re: Who wears earplugs hunting?
Don't hunt without them. I have a pair I always wear, and then I have about three backups in the shell bucket. If you hunt routinley at all without them, expect in 10 years to have your ears constantly ringing. THe only plus I have found to not using them for the first 20 years of hunting is I now can't hear my wife most of the time.

I do the game ear- works great for dove hunting....i think it works best to put the game ear away from the gun barrel and a good earplug closest to the gun barrel (that ear)... don't really like it Duck hunting but It's OK, can't really feel like i hear the real tones when , i am calling, but i can't call anyway
........usually have to turn it down as you hear everything, including circling ducks...i started using ear protection too late in my hunting career

Where can I get some of these? I have the foam kind that I use when dove hunting, but haven't used them duck hunting because I can't 'listen' with them (You know what I mean.)
Nobody owes you anything.

I've bought a pair or two from Swann's, Academy also has them and I sure at Surplus City, I think Silencio(sp?) makes them

Re: Who wears earplugs hunting?
If I duck hunting with a group in a blind, count me as one wearing ear plugs. My ears already ring 24/7/365 and I'm only 28. They've been ringing for years now and I will fail a hearing test if you put me on one. If I'm hunting alone, I don't wear them, but that habit is slowly starting to change.
When I'm working in the shop grinding or cutting some aluminum with a skill saw, I always wear them.

I heard it can really affect your duck calling. You'll be turbo-calling when they're close and not realize it.

That is absolutely correct when it comes to the electronic muffs. They will compress your duck calling, too.

Re: Who wears earplugs hunting?
I been wearing the disposable foam ear plugs for decades now. True, it does affect your ability to hear your duck call. I've learned to "feel" the back pressure resonance while calling and seem to be doing fine with it. It did take some getting used to.
I would rather go dove hunting (sitting alone) without ear plugs than to duck hunt (group) without wearing ear plugs. I don't think dove shells are as loud as magnum duck loads anyway.
