I awoke this morning to 27 degree weather,calm winds,and a clear sky.
My hunting partner and I had decided to hunt an old slough we new of. As we departed from camp the sky was bright with the near full moon, memories of past hunts with my friends light up my mind. We arrived at the slough and set out our decoys and enjoyed the morning stillness with his 14 year old son. Daylight was greeted by the sounds of wings overhead. Wood ducks I said to my partner. Two drakes and a hen made a loop and came to our decoys and the 14 year old made his shot true, 1 drake in the bag. 5 mins later a lone drake appeared. My buddy was out of position and could not shoot so I told his son to take him, three shots later the drake was outbound to parts unknown so I touched of my SuperX-2 and the bird folded. My faithful and true friend with 4 legs(Brandy) sat at heel waiting for her command to go. I sent her and watched as she scooped up the bird and returned to me. As she approached she turned those big brown eyes up towards me as if to say look what you have killed daddy. She returned to heel and delivered a banded woody. Although we only killed 3 woodys, one of which was banded, the time spent with friends, family, and a true companion was priceless. Will post band results as soon as I get them.
