Anyone know where to find a great Lab pup?

Postby brandonvet » Thu Jan 29, 2009 4:10 pm

I have a 10 yr old chocolate, "Abby", who has been a great dog both in the water and around the house. She's seen alot and helped us raise 2 yung'uns. Unfortunately, her arthritis and age no longer permit her to be a reliable hunting dog...so she's officially retired now. She just keeps the boogers away now.

Question is...where do I look for a really nice Lab puppy? I've heard of Wildrose kennels, anyone have any experiences buying a pup from them. I don't mind spending some money for a really nice dog. I'm not in any hurry to acquire one. I just want to get a really nice dog. Abby will be hard to replace...I've been fortunate to have had the pleasure of her company for a long time.

Brandonvet, I know of a very nice, in my opinion, that has just taken place a couple of weeks ago. There should be some nice Chocolate pups with a very good pedigree. I personally know the Dam of the litter and she is one nice dog. Good around the house and an excellent hunting dog. You will not find anyone that takes better care of his pups. Both parents have all of their health clearances including EIC . Here is a link to the web page of the litter. Check out the whole site......:)

Question is...where do I look for a really nice Lab puppy? I've heard of Wildrose kennels, anyone have any experiences buying a pup from them. I don't mind spending some money for a really nice dog. first off, you won't ever replace her. 2nd, I wouldn't expect too much feedback here w/ experience on wildrose pups. NOT to start american vs brit drivel, just throwing a little information at ya with good intentions. The majority here hunt ducks and participate in "american" type dog games. Hunt test mostly, that resemble and test dogs for the way we hunt. The brit trials don't as much resemble what we do, so in short, it makes a good bit of sense to most that we get pups out of dogs that have proven they can do what we want.

If unsure about pedigrees, litters etc., a good breeder is where its at. What do you want? The better you can explain that, the better they can help. ex., if you're set on a brown dog, the breeder/litter Sundown49 pointed out might be a good start. Health clearances, and being a repeat breeding, they should have a good idea what to expect. If it seems to be a fit, can help select a pup too.

Give the lowdown on what you consider "really nice", and plan to do w/ the dog. Will help the folks here point you in the right direction.

We have a really nice litter available right now, the sire is GRHRCH "Cody" (Jim Thompson's dog - passed 2 straights grands for his title) and the dam is HR "Tory" who will be running the grand this spring after she gets the last pass for her HRCH. Last year, she went 5-6 in Finished tests - only coming 5 points shy of her title. We have one black female, and 1 black male available from the litter - 5 weeks old, $800.
See http://www.trinityoaklabs.com/puppiespage.html, second litter listed

very nice litter.......wish I was ready for another.

brandonvet, Duck Chaser gave you some good advise. One thing I would add, is to call a few pro trainers and get their imput on a litter. They see and train tons of dogs and know what breedings work and what don't. Or ask the breeder for some references.

I very much appreciate that advice. I can appreciate the Brit vs. American thing, and i do agree with you. To elaborate on what I'm looking for... I want a serious retriever that I can reliably take duck hunting with me; one that will be quiet in the blind and swim through an ironwood bush if she has to, instead of taking the long way around; one that will spot the ducks before you do and mark each bird as it falls; one that has a great nose for the ducks and can sniff 'em out when needed; also, a dog that can be a part of the family and a companion; that's what I'm looking for...that, to me, is a great lab.

Honestly... I would buy a nice finished dog... would run you from 3 to 6k.

Too many variables in a puppy to get exactly what you are looking for.

As of last week, there was one female left out of a breeding between Robbie Bagget's dog, Zip, and Mike Arcement's female, Belle. Zip is a GRHRCH and Master Hunter. Belle is a HRCH with one Grand pass. (Not sure of her title in AKC). I've run tests with both dogs and do not hesitate to say that the pups from this litter SHOULD be nice. Both parents are excellent. Jennifer Young whelped the litter. Her number is 225-445-5012.
