I am surprised at how many carry an extra firearm on them for safety. I have hunted public land all of my life and have never thought about needing to carry a backup weapon or a weapon for protection at all.

You are living in a fairy tale land my friend. You are borderline wreck less not protecting yourself in my humble opinion. The notion of "well it won't happen to me" will only get you killed quicker. I respect one's opinion not to carry although I don't agree with it. I can be very blunt with my views on the issue so I apologize if I come off as such. I have covered this issue in depth. Do a search on "concealed carry" and you will see some reasons I am for it. I feel I have covered it in depth but if you would like I would be happy to write out a longer response.

In a few words for why I carry, "I refuse to be a victim" comes to mind and if someone is raping your daughter are you going to politely ask them to stop? In the woods, you come up on some fellas growing pot or cooking meth, they are armed your not, what will happen? I am not condoning a shootout at the O.K. WMA, just saying a little prevention goes a long way. If you are in the situation as many of us are daily hunting, secluded and not within a feasible distance for help to arrive, you are much better off fending for yourself. One of the many reason's I carry 24/7.

Like I said I will be happy to write a book on the subject if need be but if you will search the topic it has been covered in depth.

I remember an a hole in Florida a few years back that killed random people on public land while deer hunting then took their stuff. It happens. I myself have run into some preaty shady charecters while hunting, H20Fowl and Cajun Squeler for instance. Remember where you are

I am fully aware of the dangers in the 'real world'. I just commented that I am surprised because of my experiences with public land hunting. I know a lot of hunters and none carry a 'backup' weapon. Now I don't disagree with you; I feel that someone should do whatever makes them feel safer.

Mine is not necessarily a back up. It is a self defense gun, not to shoot a deer with if my rifle jams. Only thing it is backing up is me. A cased shotgun or unloaded rifle would be no good if you got in trouble out there would it? I just think accessibility could keep you in the fight much longer than pleading for your life because your gun is cased/unloaded.
