Poll - How do you protect yourself in the woods

Postby LostBoy » Tue Jan 20, 2009 7:38 pm

All the talk about the ECC has me thinking about how, or if you are prepared to protect yourselves to and from your hunting spot. When I was about ten I happened to notice my dad loading his shotgun when we got out of the truck (something he and my granddad always did) and I noticed the first shell was a slug and the next two were buckshot. I asked my dad why he did this and he said "Son, there are some really bad things in that swamp both animal and human. Those duck loads would just piss a man off, and we wouldn't want to make anyone mad would we." I will confess I am usually packing backup and loaded with 000, unless I am traveling with others in a boat, then I case the unloaded shotgun.

Are you prepared. If so how. Interested to know what the general consensus is.

I work in Memphis so I always carry, but when I hit the woods, it is always the sporting arm of choice.

My gun is usually loaded with a buckshot or 2 walking into the swamp. We have a lot of hogs and yotes out there and we have ran up on them before. I don't want to scare a couple of piglets and try to beat the momma to death with a decoy bag. Now if we are in a boat it is unloaded in a case. now deer hunting the rifle is loaded in and out. I have shot several walking in.

Plus what if bigfoot and a black panther are getting it on a I startle them. They would kill me with there lasers and what not that come from there eyes.

Deer hunting if I can see I have my gun loaded just in case, never climb in our out of a stand with rifle loaded.

Duck, load adn unload in the hole.

Squirrell, I hunt with dogs and only load at tree when I am geting ready do shoot. Then unload before walking again.

All that loading and unloading may seem like alot of extra trouble, but the thing we usually need to be protected from is a stupid accident. Nobody ever means to accidentally shoot themselves or a hunting buddy.

I voted load and unload, however, I generally always case my gun in my floater. Never know when, I'm going to fall in, but I bet its going to happen one day. I also leave two rounds in the magazine though...even though, I couldn't get to my gun really quickly, but it is one step closer if a problem arises. I only hunt birds though...no opinion on the deer rifles, although getting in and out of a stand with a loaded rifle seems pretty ignorant.

Load and unload at my truck, if hunting on public land I ALWAYS carry a pistol on me. If I am deer hunting and up in my climber I empty the shells out and leave them in a bag at the base of the tree so if a ranger happened by he would know I was not planning on shooting a deer or anything with it Heard two many bad stories, was talking to a guy in one of my classes last semester and he was hunting out at sardis, came back to his truck (gun on his shoulder) and two guys with black masks (and skin) jumped out of the bushes, one with a metal pole and one with a machete and took his gun, wallet, cd player, ammo, binoculars, cell phone, and car keys and left him out there. Guess they figured they were close enough he would not have time to unsling his rifle and get it aimed at them before they were next to him. They would not have been so lucky if they tried that on me, I like to consider myself somewhat of a gunslinger. It comes out of nowhere very quickly.....

Almost always load and unload at the truck. An old habit learned from my Dad and Grandad.
Unless I'm duck hunting, then I load before entering the water, just in case I drop a shell.
Nowadays I also carry an "extra" firearm with me into the woods, simply because of various and sundry varmits that travel in packs might come out, and I don't want to be limited to 3 shots. (That may pose a problem if'n they're more 'an at.)
Nobody owes you anything.
