mallards in south mississippi

fellas i'm new to duck huntin an all.. but i guess this cold front we have had for the past 2 days pushed some mallards down south. Today i got 2 green heads along with the usual wood ducks down here in greene co. along leaf river. and i seen alot more. I jus wonder how long they'll hang around?

PLEASE keep shooting.....maybe you'll push 'em down to the marsh. Every now and then they get a little confused and make it down this far. Get 'em while you can, that's all I have to say. I wouldn't call this normal.

'Cause it's not just about the shooting. Calling them into a timber hole, decoying them feet-down in your face is what it's all about to me and the guys I hunt with. It's just a much more rewarding experience than pass-shooting.

Dude you have never been on a good hunt have you? I'm not talking about fast flyers whizzing by your cow turd pond either. A "good hunt" is setting up before shooting time listening to hundrends of ducks over head. As shooting time approaches seeing their silhouettes that look like swarms of mosquitoes. Having groups of 30-50 "big ducks" working, and hopefully putting their feet in the water in your spread. Anybody can pass shoot but not everybody can set up dekes properly and have the expertise to properly call big ducks. Not trying to diss your hunting because you live where you live but you have not been duck hunting yet in my book.

yea i have been huntin in the delta like that 2 times this year and limited out 3 days in a row my second trip... but just a hand full of mallards down here makes it more special

To each his own. The other main reason I prefer the delta over your type of shooting is the constant all day flights of all types of waterfowl. Geese ducks, etc. Wouldnt hunt any where else if I had the choice (which I do) Good luck on the rest of your season.

I don't take any offense to your opinion. But I have killed and hunted the big ducks many of times. Been on the Tallahatchie river while visiting family in MS this year actually and killed many greenheads, pintails, and widgeons. Now we didn't calculate a way to spread our decoys like you described but I guess that wasn't necessary to kill these big ducks. As far as the calling we hit that whistle a few times as a wood duck or a drake mallard as the ducks worked like on a string. What I meant is that we have had consistency here killing ducks. Not hit or miss like i have seen the majority of posts on this site talking about. I just enjoy shooting the fast flyers as it seems more a challenge to hit than the skillet shooting you mention. Plus the small breasted fast flying woodies and mergansers seem a little more tender and taste better on the grill.

Why all the ?? I bet you have never tried to grill your merganser have you? I bet you all just take everyone's word that they "are nasty birds and taste different". Don't knock it until you try it!

I guess I'm not typical then. I can find enough decent ducks to not have to shoot those nasty things. I'm with OJW, just don't shoot'em.
