We have a bunch of duck hunters here that are okie dokie with draining wetlands that have been wet for 30+ years, so long as the purpose is for hardwoods restoration?

Anyone ever thought that hardwoods might be better restored somewhere OTHER THAN land that has been underwater for most of 30+ years?

In my opinion, i think the message has been missed here. Austin is not bashing anyone. He is pissed as I would be, but he was making a legitimate comparision. DW took action, and DU said giddyup and have fun. He was not blaming anyone, just comparing involvement.

OK. Action in the way of a phone call to him. Did DW call MDWFP? WE do not know. Chad stated that DU HAS been in contact on the state level but neither org. can do anything about state managed lands unless asked to do so(ie:advice, engineering,pipe, etc....). That is all some of us were saying. Why the pissing contest?

I am a little behind the eight ball on this response, but here it is. I have hunted Nanah Waiya WMA ever since I moved here in 2001. I have spent alot of ours talking to Larry and Mr. M about the place, and to be honest so far its the best deer and rabbit hunting I've seen yet. They put the time and labor into that place!
As for siltation and beaver problems yep they've gott'em. Yep its natural, and yep it has to be fixed, OR the whole damned place turns into a mosquitoe farm.
Man I sympathise with anyone who has a great place gone to ruin, hell I live on the coast! Still, "sometimes you've gotta let a field rest before you can replant it" as the old timers would say.
Personally, I would wait and see what the future holds. Who knows, once the place gets back to "native" it may be all the better. Hope springs eternal, and tomorrow is a new day.

It seems as though Kevin and Chad's point has still missed the mark. MDWFP, DW and DU do not have a dog in the hunt. It is USACE land and they call the shots. If you want to call and complain to someone call USACE.

As previously stated, if it weren't for USACE purchasing the land for hardwood restoration, it would not even be a wetland area now.

Well, one thing is for sure, it does not matter if they are restoring hardwoods or building a super wal-mart, the result will be the same for the ducks. No duck habitat = NO DUCKS Why not leave it as is? The water forms islands and other hard to get to areas that grow big bucks, and there is a place for the locals to take a few ducks?

I support both DU and DW and will continue to, I was mis informed by another local that lives down there and I stand corrected thanks to Chad(Chad I will call you next week as Iwould like to talk about what the future might hold for this place). Bottom line here is no matter who did it and who knew about it the result sucks for waterfowl as well as waterfowl hunters. Lots of birds used that swamp for roosting for the county's surrounding the WMA and I fear that the result will be that we will see an enormas decrease in waterfowl in both Winston and Neshoba countys.

As for my comment about the place turning into a "mosquitoe farm". The reason behind the establishment of the area is clear. Hardwood restoration. That's why its there, the Army Corps own it, and to be frank they can dictate what ultimately happens with it. The beaver "problem" and the siltation are natural occurances. In hind sight "Problem" may not have been the right word to use. To continue with the intent of the areas goal, some of that water has to go. If the WMA, and MDFWP folks had more money and manpower maybe this artificial oasis wouldn't have happened. I'm glad it did, but all good things come to an end unfortunately.
