Need info on Starkville

Postby CSA Duckhunter » Tue Oct 30, 2001 8:19 am

I might be relocating to Starkville this coming year. I do not know the first thing about the area. I am from S.C. I will be going to MSU. I need to find a place for me and my dog to live. I prefer house rental or maybe a townhouse because apartment living does not appeal to me. I heard of a place on some lake that rents cabin-like cottages. Does anybody know what I am talking about? I am 29 years old. I hunt in Vicksburg every year. I love yall's state. Looks like I will be getting a divorse soon so I am going to get out of this rut and get another degree. Anyway, I would appreciate any suggestions you all might have. Thanks.

I don't know who owns the cabins on the lake that you mentioned but I'm pretty sure I know where they are. They are a few miles out of town. I think that will be your best bet for renting if you have to have your dog. It is one of the only places in town that will allow a large dog. The cabins are duplexes I believe, and I think the rent is a little high. Your best bet will be to contact a real estated agency in Starkville. You may come out better trying to rent a a small house in town or buy/rent a trailer.

Good luck with the move and returning to school.

I go to MSU, the Apartments I believe are called Ridge Lakes Apartments. Nice place, got a couple of friends that live there. The apartments are shaped like an "L" and overlook a lake. Lot of hunters live there, so you will probably fit in fine. One thing though, they only allow guys to rent , no women. Sounds like that won't be a problem for you! sorry had to doit! If you do ask an agent, ask about the Oktoc community of in that direction. That is heading out toward Noxubee refuge, I have a trailer out there,in one of the many cow pastures, my lab loves it. Oktoc is an old community, once was a small town, but now mostly cattle pasture. many places in MS, still are called by the old towns name, but no longer exist. The real estate rep will know what you mean when you mention Oktoc. Many farmers will lease a lot to you if you find the right one. Also if you are ooking for a trailer spot a place called the Pines Trailer Park is where most of the guys from my forestry department live. Lots are just out side of town, and cheap. The place I am thinking of is about as far north of Starkville as Oktoc is south. They are off Hwy. 389. And I don't think they have anything against women, so there is a chance you'll have some single college women living near by rather than a bunch of ugly stinky hunters.

There is also a neighbor hood that has some homes and apartments/town houses on a large lake. Called Browning Creek. It is near Oktoc also and you better have plenty of the green stuff to spare for this one.

The heck you say, GC!!!

Little Dooey's is the best, and there are a couple on Hwy. 12 in Starkville that are ok.

CSA, There is a house next door to me that is vacant. It may be a two bedroom with a fenced area in the back for the dog. I'm guessing the rent will be at least $500, but you can call Dan Camp at 662-323-5132 and ask about any houses for rent.

CSA, There's a small town 13 miles south east of Starkville on highway 12. It is called Sturgis. There's a "Mayberry" type atmosphere there. Some of the people have rental property. Now it won't do any good to call, but if you go see Sue McKinnon at McKinnon's Store on main street she will give you the info you need. She owns a house or two herself and knows all the news.

Sturgis has a population of 200. And thru next year it has the smallest K-12 public school in the state. Consolidation next year! This past August the town hosted a motorcycle rally that brought in 5000 people from around the USA.

If you act right somebody might even let you deer hunt on their place.Good luck.

Hate to do it, but GH22 is right on the money, Little Dooey's is the best in town, if you watch ESPN, Lee C is always talking about it.

CSA Duckhunter I may know a place that would be perfect for you. I lived in a little community outside of starkville called Adaton. We (about 12 forestry students) used to lease about 6 trailors out there from a man. They were in the middle of an old pasture. We had 2 ponds that the dogs could play on. We also could shoot skeet and do just about anything we wanted to out there. If your interested you can email me and I can get you my landlords name and number.

Those apartments your talking about are not far away from this farm. I dont know what they are talking about the owner wont rent to girls because I had 2 good girl friends that lived in them. They were kinda pricey for me too. But I believe they were probablly the best apartments around starkville (as far as the atmosphere and everything.)

Peewee, I could not email you. I would like to have your landlord's name and number. You can email me at mpalmer@infingerassociates.com if you do not mind. Thanks again.
