Re: My dog has heartworms on heartguard
nasty has been on hartguard her whole life.... a negative when checked, kenneth had a full yearly when he got her from me, negative last year, and now postive a year later. Knowing him and his voice when he called me this week, he's never missed a pill. Lives in al, but hunts in ms delta... yet another ground zero breakthru looks to me.
I thought tj was gonna cry last night when I told him she had the hartworms. he still has pictures of her and ribbons on the wall. I told him she'd be ok, had a good vet, and a good daddy that'll make sure she gets what she needs. travis

Just talked to vet and she will not even write prescription for multi for me.She said she would fax my file to another vet of my choice.Nasty has L1-2 heartworms.Worms are in her heart and are adult says my vet.I have not had xrays done yet but will if needed. She has no heartmumor, new monia,or fluid on her heart. This is all I can tell for now, would you guys still try multi first before treatment? She is one of Rowddy's girls and has been checked once a yr since I bought her from Travis. She has always been given a clean bill of health from the time I got her from Travis.I know most of you can relate to the feelings I have for this girl,it was a kick between the legs when I found out.I feel like I have let Travis and Tj down in the care of one of their babies and want the least pain for my dog.

You have been extremely dilgent in the care of the dog. You cannot protect against something for which the prescribed protection does not work. The dog will recover and go on with hunting and so will you. Not sure how they can tell L1-L2 without the xray which shows how much in the heart itself.
IF HG will pay you may go ahead and do the treatments. I use Multi and cannot understand a vet who will not at least research the product. It is entirely your decision and no one elses.
Just know that in the majority of cases, the dog do fine with the treatments. I feel your pain, but my girl has been out of treatments since January and has had a great hunting season.
Travis and TJ will not blame you for anything.

Any vet is as only as good as the information they are given. That said, I respect someone who won't prescribe the flavor of the month, without being familar with the ins and outs of it (even if personally I belive in it). Shes doing what she thinks is best for your dog and you, given the information she has that she can rely on. The fact she understands you might go somewhere else, means shes not looking for the bucks and the fact she didnt do anything but be helpful instead of running a bill up. You only know what you know, and you only act on what you know, from what you know to be reliable socurces if your any kind of professional. Doesnt matter if I tell a pilot the weather is ok, if the ice makes the plane crash, its his fault kinda deal.
kenneth, I know you took good care of her. TJ knows. He asks about ya'll all the time. Only way either of us can ever let a dog go, is knowing they're going somewhere they'll be well taken care of. Neither of us have ever been let down by you, or any of our other friends.
Your vet seems to be on your (and most importantly, your dog's side). Learn, talk to, and research, but ultimately your vet is going to be the one treating the dog. I trust my vet, and dont go against his advice even if it isnt what i want to hear. travis
