Just at legal a group of Woodies buzzed the dekes, but they startled me so bad that I didn't even get a shot off. Few minutes later a single came blazing by, BOOM, BOOM and nothing to show for it except one angry dog. Several more buzz by, but they are outta range. We sit and wait until about 7:15 when I hear a couple of quacks. I call back at them and all of a sudden there's about 30 mallards overhead, and they are looking hard at the decoys. They give me 3 passes, each one a little lower. This is gonna work perfect, then they decide to land at the other end of the lake. I hit 'em with a comeback call, and peel 2 off from the flock just before they land. They make a 180 degree turn, come straight into my dekes and cup up about 25 yards out. 2 shots, 2 fat greenheads down, and 1 happy dog.
I've been hunting this lake for 10 years now, and never killed anything but Woodies, and the occasional Bluebill. I don't know where they came from but they sure did make my morning! Merry Christmas everybody!!!
Edit to add: In the office by 8:00 too.
