Mattress shopping....need input on what to buy

Postby Don Miller » Wed Dec 17, 2008 4:05 pm

and where. I'm looking for a good mattress and box spring but at the best price possible. After 25 years on the same mattress it's time for a new one. Any help would be greatly appreciated being that I know nothing about matresses.

25 years with you sleeping on it!! Need to contact the Smithsonian and see if they are interested in it!

We use some kinda pillowtop deal and it's comfortable and all, but we stayed at a freinds house a few weeks back and used one of those sleep number beds. Those things are the bomb. However I don't think them and budget go together.

I got about a 15 year old mattress at my house, and always thought it was good. Last year bought a sealy tempurpedic for the camp and it is the cat's booty. I mean its no comparison. Its expensive, but worth it. Check out troy garrett in cleveland, Factory Direct Furniture. He has about the largest store in the area and good prices. Its located on Hwy 8 on the east end of cleveland.

Not if you don't like sleeping hot. They radiate heat like a convection oven. However, it is worth it to spend $1K or more. For instance if you average 300 nights a year on your relic at 6 hours per night that is 45000 hours in the bed. It is worth it to drop some cash on a good mattress IMHO.

We just started carrying Serta and they make some great mattresses. They also use memory foam on some models, which is what Tempurpedic uses. The memory foam can be somewhat hot so you need to know that if you are hot natured. Latex is cooler and there are also different types of memory foam that are cooler than most types. Serta also has great warranties on all of their products. The Serta Perfect Sleeper and the Perfect Day are both great mattresses. Their website tells all about them. http://www.serta.com

How important is a good box spring? Can I get by with a new mattress and old box spring or do I need to buy a new one?

Don, if you been sleeping on the old box springs for 25 years you may want to concider a new set. not that it matters because if you go with a good quality mattress it won't matter if you lay it on a concrete floor. my wife just had to have a GOOD mattress and i told her to go get one, just don't let me know how much it cost....we were having to buy a new mattress every 3 or 4 years and she claims these NEW expensive mattress was the real deal. the new one sure does sleep good, just have to let time tell.

i bought a brand new 1967 ford pickup for 1999.00 and this mattress cost more than the new truck

When we got married 20 years ago there was a manufacture here in Tupelo that made the Serta label and some other name brands. The manager sold us one of the line for like $500 and told me that a good deal of the price is what covering goes over the mattress. The $500 mattress he sold us would have been over $1,000 retail.

Ask about the different covering options and you might be able to save some money.

i got some kind of serta with a heck of a pillow top. It cost like 2k. I HATE that piece of crap. I sleep on the one in the guest room. It was a 500$ one from costco. Try it out before you buy it. I let my wife go out and get the one she wqanted. She hates it now too. I slept on a sleep number at a hotel recently and that was the worst thing ever. I stayed up for 3 nights in a row trying to get it right. It sucked!!!
