Hevi Steel - not too happy
Hevi Steel - not too happy
Ok, so I decided to try some new shells this year and have a friend that swears by hevi shot. So I went ahead and sunk 250 into a case of #2's. I also got my standard kent shells, but figured I would give these guys a try. Once I get them I went out and shot them at some paper. I was a little dissapointed at the number of shots in the kill zone, but figured that maybe since its "hevi" they will hit harder and make up for the poor pattern. Well after shooting some and having less than stellar results I was curious and cut one open. To my great suprise the first thing I discovered was some sort of grass seed in the shell surrounded by what looks like sylica gell. Then I looked at the pellets. Lets say that there were 80 or so in the shot. Well about 1/3 of them were two pellets of varying size stuck together. And the rest were all semi oblong with a tiny nipple bb stuck on them. There was no uniformity to the shot and with a bunch of them stuck together as "double pellets" I can now fully understand why they didnt pattern well. I called and left a message for them last week and sent an email in today. It would be one thing if they advertized the shot as being non uniform so that it would hit harder, but its just advertised as heavier than steel. Just an FYI for anyone out there thinking of buying this stuff.

It's always been advertised that way. All heavy shot is like that. Even winchesters Expert Steel loads and Blaclouds Steel loads are like that.
Re: Hevi Steel - not too happy
I did not like the hevi steel but the hevi shot is the ticket.

Heavy Shot = Dead Ducks

i agree i shot my first box this weekend and i could tell a major difference...it actually feels like there is something inside your shells..the ducks just fold up instead of gliding off 200 yards..

I use the ole fashioned steel... Getting them in the middle of the pattern is paramount, shoot the heads vice the body and they fold just fine... At least 29 of the 30 (5 hunters) we killed last week did... My "Pop" got a Scotch Double at 40 yards, my brother uses a OA 20Ga, and I blew the head off (50%) of a Green Wing... All limited out using plain old steel...
Regardless of what load you are shooting, aim for the head... Body shots are your gliders - lead them a little further.

Hevi Steel is the worst shell I have ever shot. Its not HeviShot.

With all the "new fangled" shot types out there today, steel is "old fashioned"... To set the record straight, when I was learning to hunt ducks, we used lead... That's really "old fashioned", just like me...

I shot a case of Bismuth a year or two ago... Was unimpressed, velocity is noticably slower than steel... Didn't see any real difference once O got the new lead figured out... And the cost differnce is substantial... Not worth the money in my opinion.
