Shotgun Barrel Lengths?
Re: Shotgun Barrel Lengths?
Tell you what you do. You take an 870 Remington with a 24" bbrl with a standard choke in it. Shoot a Dryloc 1 9/16 oz load of 2's thru it over a chronograph. Then take the same gun and put a 28" bbrl with a ported choke on it and shoot the same load over the same chronograph. You tell me what the difference in it is???? I'll tell you it's a hell of a difference! Nearly 200fps! That's a 15% reduction in power! If you can't notice that then your crazy!

I would go with the 28 inch!

This is from Small Arms Review, but there is a bunch of other empirical data out there. Your chrony interval with pellet shot strings (which are long) can make the data jump all over the place. If you run the numbers, due to the resistance of the air, the difference in a couple hundred fps as far as retained energy is almost nil at 40 yards. Its pretty significant at 10 or 15, though.
