Best Shells?
Best Shells?
What are the best shotgun shells for your money? I shoot a 3.5" Benelli Super Black Eagle and trying to figure out what I should shoot. What brand and what size should I shoot? BB's, 1,2,3?? Just wondering?

Definitely Winchester Dry-lock 3.5 inch 2 shot. As far as shot size goes, whatever size I shoot seems to knock them out of the sky (when I hit them, of course). However, the brand you shoot out of your SBE seems very important to me. I have owned a SBE for many years. I REFUSE TO SHOOT KENT SHOTGUN SHELLS!!!!!!! For example, if your Kent shells get wet and you leave them for a while, it is very likely that when you pull the trigger, it will go "Poof," and your pellets will fall out of the end of your barrel (it has happened to me more times than I can count on my fingers and toes). On top of that, you are stuck with trying to get the wad out of your barrel and you obviously know how complicated it can be to take you SBE apart in the blind. Of all the years that I have duck hunted, I have never had a problem with my Dry-Locks. You can soak them in a tub of water for a week and then take them out and they will shoot like you just took them out of the box. I mean every time, too!!!!! NEVER HAD A MISFIRE, EITHER!. Therefore, don't even think about buying any other shell because just as soon as you put another shell in your barrel, a big fat Canvasback will come and "land on your head" and all you will hear is "POOF!!!!!" The lesson of the day, kids, is: "Go ahead and spend the extra couple of Dollars for a far superior shotgun shell!!!!!!"

I'm surprised at how many 3.5 fans we have. I usually only shoot those for geese. Maybe l need to kick it up another notch this year a invest insome 3.5 2 or BB's. I always had good luck with Kent but I've never soaked any. I figure if you by "water resistent shells" then if they get wet that pretty much means the fubar. Drylok's are good. The last box of federals jammed inmy 870. The brass would expand after i would shoot and the shell would jam in my barrel. Unextractable - if that's a word.

I don't shoot a 3.5, but I have always had real good luck with the Federal shells. I do not like the Remingtons at all. I have shot the Dri-Loks also and they are good, but they cost a little more than the Federal. I like to shoot 4 shot if the birds are working good, but you need some 2s as time goes on. They tend to get a little shy after awhile.

I have been shooting 3" #3 Kents for years. Often sopping wet in saltwater. Never had the first problem with the shells. However, I did get rid of 2 Super Black Eagles since they were only slightly more reliable than a prison zip gun. Buy whatever is cheaper and prints good patterns in your gun.
So many ducks, so little time....

I was gonna let this one 'slide', but..........Naaaaaaa
Why should it matter to you WHAT somebody else shoots out of their SBE?
Besides, I don't have an SBE, so don't fret about what shells I shoot
.....I mean, it wouldn't take but one time for most folks.....that's counting on fingers, toes, or (in your case), thumbs
However, I AM glad you found a shell that 'works' for you.......
REALLY!
I don't go as far as to soak my shells in a tub of water, but I get good results from Dry-loks too.
Happy Hunting, this year.....(keep yo powder dry!)

...like where?....the bottom of the slough?....... if your Kent shells get wet and you leave them for a while.......
Well, DUH!......just how long did it take you to figure-out that you don't really need to let your shells get wet, buddy?...... it is very likely that when you pull the trigger, it will go "Poof," and your pellets will fall out of the end of your barrel (it has happened to me more times than I can count on my fingers and toes).

Well, apparently you either haven't been duck hunting that long (Dry-loks came-out in what......'95, '96?) or don't shoot many shells.........because if you HAD, you would have had an occasional mis-fire (unrelated to moisture, gun malfunction, or operator error).......it's just the law of averages. I 'spose it could happen more regularly with one particular brand than another, but it'll happen to all of'em, eventually.Of all the years that I have duck hunted, I have never had a problem with my Dry-Locks. I expect shells to be able to take a little water (rain, water from gloves etc.) My experience has been that after these shells get just the hint of moisture they do not perform. I have shot a lot of kent shells that shot fine, but after this past season where in one hunt i had 3 fail on me, i will not shoot them again unless litlhitch is buying!
