Private land. No outfitter. Just endearing ourselves to the locals.

We never left a four square mile area the whole week we were there. Couple of reasons. First, in this part of SD, it was a wet fall and so a lot of the corn didn't get out. Then a bunch of it flooded. Hate when that happens. Second, most of the prairies were dry all spring and summer before being dry this fall. This little part has had water since spring. I'm sure this is why there was an abundance of water while we were there.

There's something about sitting on a section line in the evening watching THOUSANDS of mallards drop into a corn field, while listening to THOUSANDS more drop into the field behind you. I'll tell you what, I talked to rebelduckaholic during the middle of the week to rub it in a bit and I told him to pray for some weather, because there's enough food here for the whole damn flyway. Which is only kind of true. Those Scandanavian farmers ain't gonna go down without a fight. Saw several combines cutting in the middle of the night, wrestling through the mud and then later, the snow. They'll get their crop out.

The day I left, it was 26 degrees with a 30 mph North wind. And birds were getting the hell out. Most of the water in the fields had frozen and all but the biggest and deepest of the potholes as well.

Mottlet whereabouts were yal? I was there after pheasants at the end of Oct. about an hour west of Watertown. Then its was highs in the upper 60s and 70s. A guy that'd been going on that trip for years said it that there were more ducks in the area than usual. Same story where we hunted corn still standing everywhere. It was my first trip that far north and I now understand why, during a mild winter, ducks ain't coming down. Corn as far as the eye can see. I wouldn't leave either.
