Another Heart Guard Failure

Postby mtmilste » Wed Nov 05, 2008 3:07 pm

Took Kali to the vet yesterday for annuals and she tested heart worm positive. She has been on heart guard since i bought her (2 years). Nice kennel, cement slab, 15' X 18' covered roof. Nothing else I could have done I guess. Good news: they tell me sh isn't bad off and cure rate is good. Bad News: she cannot be active for 2 months so she won't get to duck hunt until January (if no complications). The other bad news: I'm a pharmacist so I got a prescription from the vet and ordered my heart guard through the pharmacy (cheaper). Heart Guard would pay for the treatment only if I bought it from the vet. The fact that I had a prescription doesn't matter! Crock of sh**. Just had to rant a little!!

I don't want you tell you what to do but you owe it to yourself to look into K-9 Advantage multi. There have been many many many cases where it has cured the heartworm infection. It seems to be very successful if the infection is light and it does not require you to kennel your dog.

That's what I did. I'm about to apply my 3rd month's treatment. Got my fingers crossed for a clean test in 3 more months.

goin through the same thing with mine right now too, just got back from our second treatment today. Give the heartguard religiously and he got the worms, talked to a friend of mine whos daughter works at a vet and said they are seeing more and more cases of this and starting some studies. Heres something that came about even though no evidence has been proven

labs are such active eaters, or mine is especially of being so active as is, that they are swallowing the pill whole, then it just passes through their systems like humans passing corn!!

start breaking up the pills into crumbles and feeding from hands, this will ensure its gets into the digestive tract then their blood. good luck with the heartguard paying for it, they ll find some loophole to get out of it. Wish id known bout the advantix, but got one more to go and he should be ready to rock by mid december.

A 6 pack is like 102 bucks. Expensive, but not compared to 60 bucks a 6 pack for something that doesnt work. It also repels skeeters and fleas (does not work on ticks supposedly). travis

By the time you compare the cost of a single treatment that 102.00 is cheap. Specially considering it works...

Straight Ivomec .1cc for every 10lbs. 60lb dog gets .60cc once a month never a problem. Almost everyone I know with labs uses this method and no one has ever had a problem. And it is not expensive 49.00 for 50ml (cc is the same as ml)

Masley - There is a vet in Madison that carries it. I don't remember the name of place, but I got my vet to prescribe it and went and bought it from them. I'm hoping the stuff works like Trey has promised and everyone else says because I sure don't want to do the heartworm treatment.
