As much as a hate to admit it, my old girl appears to be wearing down. She is hacking and coughing up some glop that has blood and heart worms in it. She is almost 12 and was treated once. The treatment almost killed her and reluctantly, I decided to pass on a second round of treatment about three years ago. I kept her on preventive after the first round but she tested positive again about 8 months later. I was advised to take her off of preventive about 3.5 years ago. She appears to be happy and comfortable 90% of the time, but she is short of breath or coughing 10% of the time.
If anyone has been through this experience, then please let me know what to expect in the coming months. PM me if you like. Many thanks...

I hate to hear that hoss....I know what it is like to lose your best friend. I would talk to the vet and ask for an honest opinion on her condition. If she seems to be in distress and is coughing up blood, I would consider putting her down if it was severe enough. I had a dog put down that attacked by daughter (it wasn't mine...dalmation) and it was actually one of the most peaceful things I've ever seen. They just go to sleep and don't flinch at all. I know that seems cruel...but it would be the most humane thing I could do for my best friend if he/she were suffering. It would be hard, no doubt, but better for the dog in the long run.

I know what you are going through,
I just opened this topic for the first time and it was because I knew this would not be a happy topic. I wish there was something I could do!
