Re: What handgun???
Have 9mm glock-love it--house(cheaper to plink with) have 45 s&w --truck.. have s&w 357--house ,(cheap to plink with the 38's) ..today would probably buy a cross between the 9mm and 45--being the 10mm or 40 cal--lot of rounds and good power.....house protection..i believe in a 12g with high brass #4,5 or6(smokes at close range without as much damage thru walls) (followed by reloads of buckshot---if the fight goes on long enough to reload,we're in a bind anyway or outside), also on house protection,my thoughts were the same as yours(lock box beside the bed) but after a crack head came in on my wife and daughter last year- my opinion has really changed

You make an excellent point and I started to say something about this, but decided to hold off until now.
Locked in a box for home protection may be the worst thing. #1, if you have to fumble with a key or a lock, you worsen your chances of protection. #2, if your in a hurry to unlock the box, aim, etc. you greater the chances of misfire or firing at something you may not want to fire at.
That would be similar to having a pistol for home protection that is sitting locked in a gun safe or gun cabinet. If you have to access something, your protection decreases. At the same time you will think, what happens if my child walks in my room, opens the nightstand and plays with the pistol as has happened so many times. That's a decission to make on where and how to keep it. If you want true protection, then hidden somewhere unlocked is the best. If you want child protection, then store it in a place that is out of reach (up on a shelf or something).

Re: What handgun???
Good point Mud Hog, I was thinking of one of those boxes that read fingerprints or what ever, but keeping it on the top shelf of my closet would probably be smarter.
I just worry about the kids, if something were to happen to them if they found it and played with it I couldnt live with myself. I know how to hanle a pistol I just dont own one right now and I am going to make sure the wife knows exactly how to use it (she is already familiar with my benelli's).
Thanks for the input guys.

Re: What handgun???
I'd get a 45. Less ammo but much larger grain bullet I believe and really puts a thump on the bad guy.
Kimber or springfield 1911 are the sexiest and feel great.
That being said I have a sig sauer226 chambered in 40cal and really enjoy it. 10rds and pretty darn accurate. I like an exposed hammer on my guns. that's just me though.

toddy,
don't know if this plays into your situation but for me, I'm left handed, and that played a factor in choosing my weapon. the xd is ambedextrious (?sp?) and that swung me to that model and really like it. I've had 2 friends qualify for their permit with it and both were amazed on how well it performed. I like the ruger as well, but if a revolver is in the mix look at the tarus in 357. they're holding 7 rounds now, a nice little surprise if someone is counting your shots thinking you only have 6 with the revolver. good luck in your search.

I dont want a cheaply made gun but I dont need one like that kimber posted above, I am thinking around 500, but cheaper if I can get just a reliable piece for less. Realistically I am not going to shoot it very much so I dont really need a high end gun.
You might want to consider a revolver, maybe a 6inch barell.. Something that is reliable and will serve as a good home defense weapon, and can be used for hunting to.. Maybe a 357..

Re: What handgun???
My pistols consist of an XD40 service, Kahr CW9, and the wife's Bersa Thunder .380. I don't have a single complaint about any of the 3. I shoot the Kahr the best. If you're going to shoot a fair amount, 9mm is the way to go due to ammo prices. Honestly, I wish my XD was a 9mm for cheaper ammo and more capacity (extra 4 rounds). I personlly don't feel that you are leaving anything on the table by picking the 9mm, due to the modern rounds that are available. I shoot Speer Gold Dot 124gr +p Short Barrel out of my Kahr.

+1 on both points
If i have to reload, you better call the national guard
that means 5 rounds from the 870 and 8 rounds from the 1911 were not enough

Ok then go with what I use for home protection. The Taurus Judge.. Shoots 410 shells and 45 Long colt shells.

Re: What handgun???
..........................................after the crackhead came in on my girls at 11pm thru an unlocked door---these are the changes....shot gun or pistol in every or every other room, loaded, high up(head high) hidden, new alarm system with panic button in every other room, new attitude on locking doors.....grew up "with no loaded guns in the car or house" but no little ones in the house now,and odds are you will not have time to "get" a gun and load ithotty toddy wrote:Good point Mud Hog, I was thinking of one of those boxes that read fingerprints or what ever, but keeping it on the top shelf of my closet would probably be smarter.

Re: What handgun???
i have 2 9mm and a .40, have a sec gen glock 17, cz 75 compact, and a H/K usp in 40, i carry the glock more than anything simply because i dont have to keep it wiped down, it hasnt been cleaned in 5 years, have shot aprox 30,000 to 40,000 rounds through it with one malfuction and it was from a non glack mag, dont get sherrea tubes, and only get glock mags with steal linners, for springs i use wolf spring, if you plan on doing a lot of plinking then get a dillion square deal reloader, it will load aprox 400 to 500 rounds and hour, buy primers by 10,000 and powder in the large kegs, montana gold bullets are good, if you get a glock do not shoot lead bullets out of it unless you change the barrel, the factory glock barrel for some reason will build up lead and lead to a blown barrel or buldging,
