Thank you Lord for this wet summer... Amen.

Postby jwarwick » Wed Sep 24, 2008 8:53 am

I'm giving thanks for the rains this summer. My japanese millet / brown top millet mixed crop is the best I've ever made. It is all about the rain. At times during this summer, this 6 acre duck plot had 2-4 inches of water ponded in it- perfect for the jap. The ponding also inhibited weed growth (my opinion) and made this a really clean crop. Also, the rains really jumped up the growth of natural grasses around the entire area.

Of course all this means nothing without the birds coming down... start praying again? Will do!

The larger point is that the rain has helped every duck feeding spot in the south. Public or private land... doesn't matter.
The amount of natural grasses in any wet spot in the delta is way WAY above average.

Unfortunately that will probably just spread out those that make it this far south. :(

How do you hunt that wide open field? You got a ditch or somethin running along side of it?

Thats a good question...
Mostly off the edge in a steel sled blind we can drag around behind an ATV. Those flag bushes around the edges of the field are 8 to 10 feet tall and are great cover.

Most years we let some tall brush and coffeeweed grow tall in the middle of the plot then we slide the blind up into that cover.
This year I disked it all under for some reason.

A pit blind would be deadly, but I don't want to commit to one spot.

There is one drainage ditch with some small willows too... they are just now large enough to make some cover for hunters.

There are some openings on the surrounding brush that are flooded also. Those spots have good cover.

Its a mixed bag, and it all depends on how the ducks want to play the game.

If you plant/build it they will come  Heck even if its Feb. befroe they show up its better than sittign in a deer stand. Some of my best times duck hunting happen at camp, it dont matter if we shoot ducks or shoot whiskey we always have fun, shooting birds is just an added bonus.

This is your opinion, sounds like your duck hunts have been a hell of a lot easier than mine in the past, I have figured out quick (especially where I live) if you don't have the money for a boat then your screwed, so I chase venison
