90 DAYS -- 4 DUCKS/DAY

Postby Jefferson » Sat Oct 20, 2001 6:52 pm

Hello to everyone. This is one of my first posts to this site. However, I have been a reader since shortly after the site was created and have developed some healthy respect for most of you. I tracked Benny's departure. How many of you recall Benny from the days of SPAV and "The Hos." Well, now to the point . . .

A 90 day -- 4 ducks/day season makes more sense in my estimation than the current, maximum season length of 60 days under the MS Flyway Council's framework. The potential impact on total harvest could be greater because of the total number of weekend days. This point, I am willing to possibly concede. What are the other issues a 90 day, 4 ducks/day season would present to each of you?

Thank you in advance for all replies, meaningful or not.

Well, divorces are the first issue it would raise. Secondly, why? Why take the longest season we have ever had, a season long enough now, and make it half again as long? Since all esitamtes are done on mallard populations, and your 4 duck limit would have to have the mallards reduced, there is no feasable way to figure what the kill would be. Besides the fact, 90 days is too damn long. You'd be starting before they get here, and ending after they had been shot to **** for too long. Give me quailty anyday. The very ideal of a 90 day season is silly. travis

Thirty days in November or thirty days in Feb? I dunno. I don't think we need either one.

..well, having more time in November wouldn't net you anymore ducks, because hardly any are down yet. Now, hunting in Feb. should not be allowed. Because when do you usually see a million ducks--the day after season closes. So, there's a reason for cutting it off when they do. To keep more of them making it back to Canada to make more ducks.

I think they start to pair up as season ends. And you know us drakes can't think straight when we're chasing the hens....so, it'd be unfair to hunt 'em then.

Now, 4 ducks is plenty if you want to debate numbers....just get rid of the hens from the 6 total allowed today.

Silly? I think not. Hunt the weather . . . hunt when you can . . . learn new ways to hunt. Look to the Pacific Flyway -- a season longer than 60 days. I agree about more divorces, but what about more opportunities for women to hunt as well as men. As far as the ducks being here . . . quite a number of folks have ducks now and will have ducks throughout November, December, & January. Goosebruce -- you get around alot and know folks in other parts of the country hunt 60 days plus counting the geese. As far as the season being set on mallard numbers, I do not buy that point, but perhaps you can enlighten me.

I'd have to agree with them 90 days is just toooooo long. I don't particularly care for swatting mosquitos and tangling with ol' no shoulders when I go duck hunting. They ought to open the season on Dec 1 close it for Christmas day, then end it on Jan 31. I don't care what day of the week any of these 3 days fall on that is how i feel it should be set up. Give me those additional days in February and we can talk....just kidding. Anyway I only get to hunt during the last 3 weeks of January, so other than an occasional Saturday and/or Sunday during December I'm pretty much limited to those 3 weeks. When they cut it short that cuts into my total available days to hunt.

Swamp Rat would difinetly have a very hard time with a 90 day season. There is no way I could kkep my Landcruiser and outboard motor running that long; and lenghty shop repair would be out of the question. What about shuttling the decoys back and forth from home fixing the leaky ones. How long does an Aqua Seal patch last on waders? One exta month of feathers blowing around in the
yard. The neighbors complain about warming up the 3 wheeler at 4 Am now as it is. On the bright side with only 4 ducks a day it would not take as long to clean them.
