Men sentenced on hunting charges
Associated Press

BISMARCK - Three South Carolina men were sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court for hunting violations in North Dakota.

Charles Bass Sr., 55; Charles Bass Jr., 36; and Thomas Bracy, 44, all from Georgetown, S.C., all pleaded guilty to exceeding the possession limit of migratory game birds.

The men had 195 ducks and 30 Canada geese when they were stopped near Carrington, N.D., in October 2002.

They each were sentenced to 1½ years of probation, with no hunting privileges worldwide, and ordered to pay $3,000 in restitution apiece.

They also will forfeit several items, including six shotguns.

Not enough time and fine! It should be atleast 20 times what it would cost them to go south of the border and kill the hell out of ducks and geese. I hope they don't get to hunt ever.

Piss on em!

I don't think the fine is enough. If they went on a 3 day hunt and did this, then the each averaged killing 21.6 ducks and 1 goose a day. There are a lot of blokes out there that would fork out $3000 for a 3 day hunt like that. I think it should have been in the $10g to $12g range and no hunting privileges for at least 3 years.

Judge, is your opinion on the fine to lenient or just?

Because of my line of work I think the jackasses should get a whole lot more. I know that an illegal redfish is $500. That is per FISH! Why doesn't f&w has stiff fines like that. Make a person think twice about slaughtering that many ducks. That would come out to be $97,500, just for the ducks! I'm sure a judge could call it even at an even $100k. Sounds good to me.

I must be mistaken, but I thought that there was a per bird fine for every bird over the limit.

This is suprising coming out of Georgetown. I know a former IGFA president that lives in Georgetown and and have other friends from there that are some of the finest sportsmen I know. That said, I think the penalty is light. My wife is from south La. and I hear tales from years past when folks outlawed like this, but I didn't know it still took place. Shame.

Just read the Field and Stream article on the guys in California...there should be more done to those guys...makes the rest of us look bad and gives the folks trying to end hunting more ammo!!

When I was a teenager, I would spotlight a rabbit on occasion (sure hope there's a statute of limitations on that, Judge), shot late twice in my life (almost got nailed the last time and scared the jiminy-Christmas out of me-so bad I never did it again). But I have never had the desire just to kill ducks until I got tired of it; a limit has always been enough (and I've had to do with a lot less lately). I just don't understand that. I know there is no "degree" of wrong. What I did was just as illegal. But, these weren't dumb kids, either What makes someone want to kill that many ducks?
