Duck Question ! ( Answer when your thru laughing ! )

Postby RIP EM » Mon Sep 22, 2003 10:14 am

I heard some of you talking on here the other day.

The subject was, planting "sweet taters", as a method to attract ducks !

FINE !

Then,.... someone mentioned how the "SMELL", would pull em in from all over.......
THE SMELL ???...... Was this a joke on Ol' Rip Em ???
If so,....... ya got me !!!

If its not a joke,....... Answer this.

If a duck can "smell" decomposing sweet taters, WHAT IN TARNATION KEEPS THEM FROM SMELLING ME AND MY HUNTING BUDDIES (SMOKING A GOOD O'L CAMEL FILTER OR WINSTON LIGHT) WHEN THEY SWING DOWNWIND TO COME INTO THE SPREAD ????

Is this responsible for the un-explainable flare !

Is this why David Melton cant kill a duck ?

Personally..... I think I've been had !

Just wondering !

Hey Rip, those 2 holes by their heads up on their bills are their nostrils. Not a zoologist/olfactory expert but gotta be for smelling and breathing when they're straining through their bills. The threshold or keenness of their smell is unkown to me, but common sense tells you they're not gonna smell a lot flying along. But if they catch a smell of something they particularly like that is so strong they do smell it , well why not. Them boys in Ark. are believers. Lots of different food sources can smell even to the hunters if it's strong enough. Wouldn't you agree? They maybe can fly low over a slough, bayou and actually smell what's down there as they pass. To be able to smell cigarretes or human scent well I think you got me.

Dear goodness, if ducks develop the sense of smell as keen as a deer is, we never will kill one!

Did you hear the one about the mother duck who had two eggs hatch. She named the two ducklings In and Out. One day, In and Out left the nest and got lost. The mother duck only found In and never did find Out. Wanna know how she found the one....In stinked!

I am no expert, but I think I read on here a while back that the ducks supposedly liked the oil from the sweet potatoes as they decomposed in the flooded field. Good for their feathers, I think? If I remember correctly there was also some discussion about using molasses in a duck hole for the same reason. I also think there was some debate about the legality of these techniques.

Just saying what I recall reading - not sure about the truth of it all.

Rip Em...Everytime I drive up and down 49 to Jackson and see these folks with pickup loads of sweet taters I can't help but think of you and your post. Maybe we should buy a truckload and "sweeten" up a good honey hole..no pun intended. :P
