+1 on the Foiles Honker, been using one for about 3 years now, and still sounds good.

If you want the poycarb version of the Straight Meat Honker, Cabela's has some in their Bargain Cave for $29.00. Smoke color only.
I use a Dixieland short reed. It works pretty good.

Zink Power Maximus is the what worked for me. Easy to blow and get that gutteral sound and growl. It takes almost no effort to achieve the clucks and moans. Other members in my club think I been doing it for years, but only about 2 years.

I haven't used many honker calls, but of the ones I've tried, I was able to get early results and success with Doc Hull, and Tim Grounds' calls. I'm sure there are other good production calls out there, but these are 3 that helped me get started. You might try Winglock (Rick Perry) and GK calls (Bill Saunders).

Basically, any call with Victoria guts will make learning how to use a honker call relatively easy.

I bought two... a short reed Big River call that sounds great but will take some practice as it takes a little more air to make the read break over, and a Haydel's for around 8 bucks that I was able to blow pretty well right out of the box. It should be a good starter and should be sufficient for an upcoming three day hunt, then maybe I'll graduate to some better sounding calls.

Zink calls are pretty easy to use.

Send a PM to Anatadae. He is as good a "meat caller" for geese as any guide I have ever heard.
