Seen em today. Gads and widgeon. Several flocks circling some flooded fields with ducks on the water. They sure looked good.

I heard reports of 1500 to 2000 mallards in one area and they've been there for quite a while say a week or better...what do y'all think...locals or migrates? 2 separate reports about the same group of ducks neither of these folks know each other and I just happen to know both of them.

I didn't see any mallards. Just early ducks. I would kinda think the mallards are still north of us. Nothing to move them much right now except for the yankees shooting at them.

'Was building a dog run and kennels in NE La, Sunday morning. 'Bout 10:15am 15 specklebellies flew over ......they were high and 'traveling'.....right down the river. 'Won't be long, now.....Lookout on October 27th! It's all done but the waiting....and that's the hardest part!

Hey you know what guys the best part about these early movers is that we finally have enough water this year to keep them around. It has been nice to ride the roads and see all the fields full of water and food for the ducks. Just hope we get some timely cold fronts and more rain the closer we get to the season.

While it's nice to see birds and water, right now.......bear in mind that they eatin'up all the stuff below the water ......that ain't necessarily good, 'cause by the time the season opens, there won't be nothin' to draw birds to a field but yo decoys......and you might not have enough decoys to keep'em out of somebody else's field.

We had 6" in the fields after the rain Saturday......it's great to have water (don't have to run the pumps and buy diesel) But we made sure the water control devices were NOT holding.......it's a little early yet......we're willin' to gamble on NOT getting later rains in return for havin' food to hold birds in the area when the season starts.

But hey, what do I know?

I beleive its big ducks, and not locals. Thing is, I think some migrate with the first few fronts, but in the past couple of years we haven't had any water to hold the early ones. This year seems to be different. Plus, I think they have an internal clock that tells them its time, maybe with the moon cycles, not necessarily the weather.

If I'm not mistaken, one of the more important factors affecting the timing of duck migration may be the diurnal cycle (# of daylight hours). Other factors include things like weather and moon phase.

So yeah BrianB, you right they have an internal clock.

Well ya'll not to burst your bubbles, but they aint' all stoppin' up north with ya'll. Went out to the lease a few days ago and it was one solid duck. Saw at least two or three thousand ducks. Mostly teal, pintail and weidgon. However it was a crap load, and if they don't head to mexico, it's gonna be hammer time in three weeks by golly!!!

I didn't hold any water this time either..I think I'll wait till about mid november, cause as someone said, if they eat it up, it's gone, gone, gone. There's enough water in the sloughs and brakes to hold them for another month. But it sure is nice to have ducks around and holding.
