I am trying to install the synthetic fore end on my 870. How do I screw that metal ring off the front of the pump assembly? Thanks

Well, I'm sure you really meant 'unscrew' ... but you almost have to make a wrench to fit the two notches in that ring. You might be able to purchase one from somewhere like Dixie Gun Works or Brownell's. Otherwise it may take some creative 'modification' of a pair of long, 'offset' needlenose pliers to reach it. 'Lotta times it's cheaper to pay someone else to fool with it. Good Luck!

i had the same problem, and that is only the beginning. i got the piece off by using a flat drill bit designed for drilling larger size holes, such as a door knob whole. not one quite as wide, of course. i cant remember if it was the 1" or the 7/8" or the 3/4" bit, but it fit perfectly. i used the bit in an electric screw driver that would allow me to lock the shaft and manually turn the bit. once i got the "bolt" off the forearm, i found that i had to reattach the forearm to the gun and pump it forcefully to get the wooden piece off the slide action. you'll see what i mean when the time comes.

Are you talking about the retaining cap that fits over the end of the magazine tube? If so, have you EVER taken it off before? How old is your gun? If it's taken a few seasons, it could be rusted on. The cap has a small spring loaded ball bearing the helps lock it in place so that it doesn't vibrate loose. Try a little WD-40 around it, the use a flate bar in the groove for leverage. I clean my gun ever time I shoot, and mine retainer still gets stuck sometimes. Also make sure that you oil the ball beaing and work it in and out to make sure it moves freely.

There is a special wrench that is made to remove the forearm retaining ring. You can do it with other tools but getting it tight again is sometimes hard. If you look down from the top of the forearm you will see the two slots that the wrench fits into. You can make a tool out of 1/4 flat stock if your handy with tools. Otherwise I would just ask a local gunsmith to take it off for you. I have done it many times at no cost it only takes a second to replace.

Do not use a ball point pen for a plug in your shotgun. I used one and the ink leaked out and dang near ruined my gun.

Ride by a cotton field and get one of those stick poles they use with the bowwevel traps, work pretty good.
