ATB'S OR DOKKEN'S

Postby sbakerz71 » Tue Jul 15, 2008 8:08 pm

I have some Dokkens and needing a few more but I was thinking about trying the Avery ATB'S.

Those that have used both which do you prefer?

Thanks
Steven

DOKENS DOKENS DOKENS. Dogs seem to not like those avery style dummies or dokens. They are hard and if your dog aint used to em most won't even pick em up...

Dokkens! ATBs can be a pain in the winter- hard and slippery.

uhh........it don't matter if it's a brick........when you tell your dog to fetch, it better fetch.

I was shown this and used as an example at a training session with Scott Greer when my pup was 6 months old. I said the same you folks are saying about the ATB's.... An ear pinch and a few nicks later, fetch means fetch, and hold. Don't matter what it is. Typical case of the dog, playin' the trainer/owner......

Now, they do tend to drop them more because they do get slippery, but don't confuse that with thinkin' your dog doesn't like them or won't hold them properly, because the can, and will.

I personally would rather throw a big 3-4 inch canvas bumper. you don't even have to teach your dog to fetch them, and they are a lot easier for them to hold on to. And you can buy 2-3 for the price of one...

I throw jumbo flagman w/ canvas for marks. They fall the same speed as a duck.

Dokkens smell like cat pee. When I use one of the 2, its the atb. I threw away every dokken I ever owned, because of the cat pee smell. travis

No duh. Mine better pick up a coke bottle if I tell her "fetch." But the ATB's are really are slippery when they get slobbery or wet, and are too wide, and they pop out of a dog's mouth all the time, even if the dog has the best intentions. I am about over both dokkens and atb's. That's why I train with thawed waterfowl most of the time now, even for pure water work.

The ATB seems no different than a plastic bumper. The dokkens on the other hand have a lot of scent that may smell like something nasty like cat pee. I think thats the reason my dogs really like them. I rub shot flyers all over them and the dogs prefer them over bumpers- they are what I often use on blinds because they seem more a reward than a plastic bumper.

I think it would be best to have some of both and swap up, just in case you go somewhere and you have to use the atb's, because if they have not seen them they not going to like them, it may cost you.

I just recently purchased 2 ATB because they are a little bigger than the Doken. My pup has a tendency to drop Birds on the way back, simply because she does not take the time to properly hold the duck. The ATB's have helped her with this because it makes her roll the ATB so she can pick it up. I would recommend the ATB's over the Doken because of this and they don't stink, but again it's strickly a personal preference.

If you have a pup that is just starting retrieving, I would use whatever the pups get most exciting about retrieveing, be it a sock, paint roller, small bumper, chew toy, etc. however, after FF I agree with DIB, Pup if told to fetch should pick up a PoleCat if properly FF.
