Digging Dog Problem
Besides an electric fence, does anyone have an idea to keep my dog from digging under the fence to escape. I really don't want to spend any large amounts of money to fix this new problem. The dog gets scared of thunder and things that go BOOM (fireworks for example), so he sees a small hole at the fence and then starts digging. I fill up the new holes and he redigs them if he wants to get out. When he escaes he stays around the house (because he is often a wimpy dog), I just don't want him to do this when we decide to go out of town.
If it doesn't work out there will never be any doubt that the pleasure was worth all the pain.

You can do the electric fence trick for 50 bucks or less. Go to Home Depot or Lowes and get the fence charger and the wire and insulators for the wire.. It takes like an hour to put up and works for all of my 4 dogs.. I had the exact same problem before I put the wire up.. No probles for 8 years now.

in my pen, I took 4 ft wide wire, cut it in half(now 2 ft wide) and laid it around the bottom of the whole pen...pain in the but, but no more digging
Re: Digging Dog Problem
bury you some expanded metal around the pen on the inside. No more digging.

There is a guy on here named Duck Nawteek that specializes in this sort of thing.
I bet he can find you a solution.

Cayenne pepper in any holes he starts digging. But the electric wire is the way to go.

Re: Digging Dog Problem
Funny story about my dog Lucy... I never noticed the hole under the fence, until my neighbor (retired guy) pointed it out. He said ole Lucy was crawling under the fence while we were gone during the day and cruising the neighborhood. She was having a blast visiting all the neighbors and then would faithfully be on the back porch by the time we got home everyday. I'm just glad we didn't have an unwanted pregnancy

Re: Digging Dog Problem
pour vinegar all the way around the fence.
Re: Digging Dog Problem
I had the same problem, when it thunders my dog was leaving the back yard, would run around and sit on the front porch lmao!!!!! It was so bad he ran THROUGH the fence (yep straight through the wood made a doggie door)!!!! Electricity around the bottom of the fence pretty much fixed the problem!! Since the electric fence had one thunderstorm and he got out, I think he jumped it then!!! Here lately I have just been putting him in his dog kennel in the carport when a bad storm comes for his own comfort (HELL if he is that scared of it I guess I can take the time to put him up to were he feels safe)

Re: Digging Dog Problem
My dog is notorious for doing this. We have a shadowbox fence around the yard and he likes to drop his ball through the fence when the neighbors are in their yard so that they will throw his ball for him. If he drops the ball through and no one throws it, he digs to get to it. I tried the underground stuff, which was expensive and he managed to find the wires where I had them twisted together (no signal) and he chewed them into. Several other remedies later, I came up with the best thing to date. I've also tried stapling fence wire to the bottom of the fence and burying it, but it's ugly and makes weedeating effectively rather difficult. Burying poop in the holes does well for just plain digging in the yard, but if something is dangling a carrot on the other side of the fence, he'll go through.
Last year, I FINALLY came up with a foolproof method. I dug a 8-10" trench under my fence over about a 50 foot stretch where he had been digging out. I then proceeded to fill it with quickrete, smooth it with a shovel into one continuous concrete pad, let it set up, cover it with dirt so no one sees it and viola! No more getting out. It's by far the most cost effective method. If he digs now, I see a nice polished strip of concrete. Eventually he figured out that his efforts were futile and he's since quit digging there. I now keep a couple of bags on hand so if he digs out, we nip it in the bud. I would advise putting him up in his kennel and letting him out to use the bathroom periodically until the quickrete sets up though. Concrete paws = expensive vet bill. I do not speak from experience, but I'd hate to have to deal with that!
Hope this helps.
