Training this time of year

Postby mharville » Tue Jul 08, 2008 9:08 am

I know everybody out there is training this time of year and working hard to keep the dogs from overheating, because no one wants to see there dog go down. Right now i'm working on double t in the mornings and water marks or water t(just starting to introduce). I'm wondering if anybody else is going or has gone through these types of drills during these hot times. Go on and jump on me, but i don't want to overwork my dog thats why i'm asking.. It's so hard to make a dog run to the 100 yard back pile more than 10-12 times even at 6 in the morning.. anybody got anything that might help or make me at least feel better a/b doing this?

T...you messin' with a harville boy again? ....better be able to run faster than last time! 8)

...as far as the hot weather training I have noticed in the last several days that my dog is being affected a lot more by the heat...the humidity has gone way up and the dog feels that worse than the temp itself...I just run the dog a few minutes per drill and keep a close eye on him...we will stop and take a break and get a drink....then we will start up again and run just a few minutes again...we stop and get water and I really watch the dog close to see if there are any signs that he is too hot...if so we take even longer on break...if it looks like he can handle a few more minutes we start again....if he looks like the heat is too much we stop...put things up and get in the cab of the truck with the AC blasting and go home...I take no chances on Gus gettin' too hot.

...you know your dog better than anyone...you know when the heat is too much...right now it doesn't take but a minute or 2 for the dog to get too hot so you have to be careful.....

...above all if you are going to take the chance be prepared to react if the dog gets too hot...me I think I will err to the side of caution...AND...the water work can actually make the dog hotter...

thanks, yea, i remember everybody talking a/b the water getting 'em hotter now.. it's usually just a couple marks(3-4) no really long swims. That's good stuff.. thanks.. sometimes i get caught up in the repetition thought of drill work.. this morning i put her up let 3 other dogs work, then let her pick up 4 more.

Here are some good straegies that will help you keep your dog safe during the dog days of summer. This was in the recent DU ENewsletter and under training section of http://www.ducks.org .

Have a plan. Have a clear cut lesson each day. You aren't going to pull off the most amazing set up ever on a hot afternoon... make each bird count. Dont dig a hole you aint got enough dog (heatwise) to get out of. Better to simplify and get a small clear lesson, than go overboard and have to nix it and go backwards. Slow and steady progression is the key to hot summertime work. train smart, not hard. Training hard will hurt a dog in this heat, and very likely make you go backwards. Realize that if every afternoon you put a dog up thats a little better than you got out, you progressed and be happy with that. travis
