Who uses Interceptor for HW med.? I have not had any cases of HW in my kennel on Heartguard, but vet wants to change. Says Interceptor is better, but I have heard of dogs testing positive on Interceptor, Heartguard, and all other HW meds.

Tell me your good stories and your bad stories on Interceptor.

We've used it for about 20 years. Knock on wood we haven't had a failure. A discussion with our vet brought up the following info...Heartguard is effective for 30 days and kills Heartworms at a certain early stage only. Interceptor kills the Heartworms in a little later stage and actually protects for 6 weeks, therefore you have an overlap for those months that have 31 days or when you forget for a day or two.

My two have been on Interceptor from the get go on the first of every month I have in the last year and half started doubling up with Advantage-Multi on the 20th day of every month along with the Advantix flea tick and mosquito meds as well. I also keep fans blowing on them as much as possible.....Why ?????? Who the hell knows.... just doing what I can....I have seen what HW do to a dog and dont like it!!! tony

I have used it as well for 6 years on as many as 14 dogs. Knock on wood wer'e clear.

Will begin using the Advantix Multi in June in conjuction with Interceptor.

Used it for years and had two positives at same time. They paid for treatment. Eventhough, I do think it's better than HG.

I switched from HG to interceptor. Here is a little little trick....I usually do the best I can breaking up the pills in...as small as possible... little pieces and then put in food bowl. I watch to make sure that it is all gone after they have finished eating. I guess this goes back to when I used HG I heard that it needed to be broken into little pieces to help make sure it is digested better.


I give interceptor in middle of month and use the advantix (sp?) with the repellent in it at the first of the month...like T stated who the hell knows....not sure if my dogs are better protected than the next guys!

Thanks for the replies folks. As mentioned earlier, I have yet to have a positive test on Heartguard,...vet says we need to switch and I am a little reluctant to do so due to the success we have had with Heartguard. I just needed a little prod from some folks that I know take care of their dogs better than they do themselves.

Me and T are on the same schedule and same products. The end of May is when Nash and the rest of the crew go for shots and HW test. This is the first time in 2 yrs that I have gone more than 3 months with out having him tested for HW. So far so good, but to tell the truth, I am scared about the next visit, not that I think he has HW's but here in the midsouth it has been a severe issue.

Would I use interceptor by itself, no. At a bare minimum, I would use it along with the Advantix flea and tic. It is the only topical on the market that I know of that repels mosquitos. If your going to prevent heartworms why not keep the dogs from being bitten from the host insects????

Bayer Animal Heath is the manufacture of the K-9 advantage products, and as I am sure your aware they are a National Sponsor of the HRC. They have several products currently on the market, a flea only product called Advantage, they have a Flea & Tic product called K-9 Advantix, this product also helps with certain worms and repels mosquitos. They also have come out with Advantix Multi. This product protects against Fleas, Ticks, Heartworms and several other intestianal worms.

The only down side to the Advantix Multi, is that with it being a topical application, it is recommended that the dogs do not get in the water for 24 hrs. It also does not repel mosquitoes but it does have the flea and tick meds in it. by using the Ad. Multi and the regular Advantix your doubling up on the flea and tick meds and also covering all the worms.

I give the Ad. Multi on the 1st of the month and the Interceptor on the 20th along with the Advantix product that repels mosquitos on the 20th. Might seem like overkill but I to have seen what HW's do to a dog and I would rather have a little over kill than a dog cooped up in a kennel for a month or two getting over a HW treatment.

Why does he fell interceptor is better? Ive used both, the only reason I switched to Interceptor several years ago was beacuse of hook worms and Interceptor was the only product to get those as well.

Hey Charles. I may be wrong about the info. that I give you as it is second hand from Dee. She deals with the vets right now as I am very busy finishing up my last year as a high school teacher and training 12 dogs. I will be a full time trainer a week from today,...anyway,... she said he told her that Interceptor would help to protect against some parasite commonly found in pond water. I will talk to vet and report back as to exactly why he wants to switch. She stays pretty busy too and many times doesn't hear what she is supposed to hear.

When I bought my pup at 5 months old, I started her immediately on Interceptor. Well long story short, she had HW at that time and they did not show up until a second test done after 8 months old.

Now the interceptor did not take care of the adult HW because none of the meds do, but she did not have any microfilia (baby HW) due to the interceptor. W/O microfilia, it made her treatment go easier.

I use it as well on my three. No problems. Works on several type worms as well.
