River around Eagle Lake

Postby mille011 » Tue Apr 15, 2008 3:16 pm

May be a rumor, I have no proof, but I heard a few minutes ago that there was a sand boil around Eagle Lake. Anyone else heard this?

Water seeping under levee and it looks on the land side like the ground(sand, etc.) is boiling or bubbling up. If it goes unchecked, it could caue the levee to be undermined and fail. A failure or cave in is called a Cravasse.

When the water boils clear it is ok but when it boils that old muddy color then that is river water seeping under the levee and katy bar the door because it could give way. :|

Now tell me what are all of the little culverts stuck in the ground on the landside of the levee near Albemarle? I see a lot of iron deposits in the water around them.

Can't remember the name, but they are used to fight/prevent sand boils. Someone else should be able to tell you more, but I think they can be opened to allow water thru from the other side, relieving pressure.

I was on the levee Sunday over across from Davis Island and there are 15 sand boils up and down the levee, mostly around Mounds. I haven't seen that many allilgators before they were everywhere.
