Memphis got blasted...

Postby MemphisStockBroker » Fri Jul 25, 2003 7:26 am

Worse than any tornado. Happened Monday. Over 200,000 people are without power still, and it might take another week to restore it. Traffic lights are not only out... they are GONE !
Heard this morning that the city ordered 800 new traffic lights. And they are on backorder for 30 days.

Bunch of bone head drivers in Memphis think they don't have to follow the rules. Playing chicken at the intersections. Can't figure out what a 4-way stop means.

And our local juvenile deliquents are enjoying the lack security cameras, and playing catch-me-if-you-can with the overworked police. Sounds like someone needs to load up the shotgun with rock salt and pepper these kids butts a couple of times...
Sometimes you just have to close your eyes, count to ten, take a deep breath and remind yourself that you wouldn't look good in prison stripes... and just smile at that dumbass and walk away.

It sounds worse than I first heard about. Memphis without power, spooky. I hope you and yours are o.k.

Thank GOD for good ol Tough Dads ! Not many out there anymore !
I was lucky !

Storm

Postby Jordan River » Fri Jul 25, 2003 10:34 am

One good thing to come out of this. More people outside. I've met a lot of neighbors while helping clean up...some good folks. I didn't realize how much the AC and lights keep a person "in the dark" about their own neighborhood.

I hate y'all got hit by that line of storms so badly. But, I'm also glad they wore themselves out before they got here. We got hit, just not nearly as hard as y'all. Lots of good things can go on in the dark, too! You're not that old are you MSB?! :D

I was at work in Bartlett when it hit. Strongest wind I've ever seen! Traffic is crazier than usual. Did ya'll see the picture of the SUV picked up by the root ball of a big tree?

What happened up there? I have been stuck in a gravel truck for the last week and kept away from the outside world.

Glad everybody's okay.

We just had our power turned back on this morning. This is the worst I've seen. I was at work when it started, it actually blew an air conditioner off the top of my building. They said the winds were 104 mph and averaged 82 across the city. I have never seen anything like this. This is worst than the ice storm of 94. One section of road, Germantown Pkwy between Walnut Grove and Humphries Blvd. had all the light poles down in the street. This was something!! There are still 130k people without power.

Yep, yall's descriptions are correct! I've been out in this mess since it happened. Until further notice my days off have been cancelled and workin 12 hour shifts till it clears up. Trying to keep a handle on the folks MSB was describing. Now is not a good time to own a liquor or tobacco store in Memphis. Seems they are getting hit the hardest. On the day of the storm one fella laid trapped in his bed by a huge oak for over three hours till we could get to him, had to cut the legs off the bed and slide him out. Limbs stopped the main trunk literally about 3/4" from his chest, only a small cut over his eye! While burglary's have sky-rocketed the last few days, the good news is so have arrests! Oh well, got to pay for huntin season some how.

a week after the storm and 70,000 HOUSEHOLDS are still without power.

Unions. Gotta love them. Entergy sent 800 people up here to north Mississippi to help restore power. They finished within a day, and were going to go into Memphis. The electrical union in Memphis said "NO THANKS" They wanted all the overtime
work themselves, and didn't want the help.

Didn't matter that old people are dying due to the heat and lack of electricity. Thousands of $$$ are being lost due to refrigerators & freezers no longer working. Businesses are still shut down because of no electricity.

But by damn, the memphis electrical workers union is getting all the o.t. money - good for them..... the jerks.
