I am in the same boat as you. My best advice is sign up at avsforum.com. There is more info there than you could ever read. The people there generally don't like Bose due to its high price.

I am trying to stay away from the home-theater-in-a-box setup and purchase the receiver/speakers seperately. Sound is supposed to be worlds better, but cost is greater. I am looking at a Harman Kardon receiver and am still undecided on the speakers. I really liked the Klipsch Quintet 5.1 set at Best Buy, but it was a little more than I wanted to spend.

I like the Klipsch speakers as well. I have a Yamaha reciever with a matched Polk Audio speaker system. I like it as well. You can usual call sustomer suport at the speaker or reciever manufacturer and they can turn you onto to the best matched speakers or recievers.

Remember dont skimp on the speaker cables. That will make a difference in the sound.

the speaker cables are a huge cost. Don't skimp. they do make a difference. Also you said 40" -The best deal I have found was on the Vizio's at sam's club. THey have42" hdtv for like 850$. Also, talk to the salesmen as much as possible. I was convinced I needed a hddvd. The salesman talked me out of it and told me to get blueray. I am glad I listened because now all the big movie companies are blueray and not HD. I got lost in all that 1080I talk, but my system is awesome and I could not ask for more! Not sure of what I bought or why, but it is great!

I outfitted my place with a Denon reviever( AVR-2808CI)with Klipsch Reference in wall with a Martin Logan(grotto) sub. It all depends on how much you are willing to spend. The Klipsch speakers do not require a lot of power to sound great like a Boston or a JBL that require alot of power to make the same sound. Sams's in Jackson had a great deal on the Pioneer 6070 HD tv for 3200.00, that is a great savings on a 60 in tv

Rice, the Home theatre is replace everything I lost before the storm, which was pretty nice...I probably saved 50,000$ building the home myself, so I am considering this payment for my work....the insurance prices will probably never go down....this theatre system is just like buying furniture, and will be an important part of my home...so "crying in my check book" was in reference to high insurance cost, not the lack of money in my account  so if you have anything to say about home stereos let it fly, if not keep your mouth shut....and stay off this thread....thanks to everyone else for the help!!!

HD-DVD is dead. Toshiba pulled out of the market last week. Blu-Ray won the HD format war. With that said just buy a PS3 and use it as your Blu-Ray player and you get to play games on it as a bonus.

Like someone said above get on a forum that discusses this stuff. Don't forget about lighting and sound panels as well to keep the echo down if you have hardwood or concrete flooring. Also speaker placement in a room is VERY important. Don't just stick the speakers in the corners of the rooms. That's not where they belong in a serious theatre room setup. Set up the front and rear on the thirds or fifths principle. Easy to do and makes a world of difference.

I am in the same process as you but this is my first house. I broke down and bought a new tv yesterday. It was a Philips 47" LCD HDTV for $900.00. I was sick. The guys at the store looked at me funny when I said I wanted a big tubed tv. They don't make 'em anymore. So now I am on the component hunt for a deal. I believe, eventually, I will get the PS# for the blue ray palyer. And upgrade my speakers as I go.

That being said my dad's speakers are awesome. He has an Onkyo reciever and Definitive Technology speakers. He also wired all bedrooms and bathrooms and the garages with a single speaker in each room that plays both left and right noises. It is pretty neat. A side note he always tells people is to wire the whole house for speakers before the sheetrock goes up because it is much easier and cheaper that way.
