Gentleman--Pintail #'s high/low

Postby bgore » Thu Feb 21, 2008 8:30 pm

I was wondering what the pintail popullation is preceived to be on your end of the pond. Because on my end,, i have never seen pintails like I have this past season. I was wondering if there is any talk about uping the limit on these "prestigious" species of waterfowl? i kinda would like to, but then again, i am satisfied with the current law. If we did up the possesion limit would that kill the "prestigious-ness" of the bird?

I really don't count on this subject as I hunt Venice, and there is never a season where we don't have too many pintail. When it was 3/30 we had tens of thousands of pintail. In fact we normally have huntable #'s of pintail in teal season.

However I respect the science that goes into the season frameworks and bag limit and therefore if they say 1 pintail I am fine with that. I am just happy we can currently shoot them all year long so we no longer have to carry a calendar to the blind (I literally did that two years ago) to figure out when you could shoot cans and pintail.

The pace I hunted in SE AR had more pintails than mallards it seemed this year. I mean litterally thousands in the fields. They would taunt you like they knew you could only blast one

Oddly enough, I am doing a research paper on this exact subject. I like the Pintail law where it is. I am behind every law until they are "over-populated" then you put the hammer down.

We see more and more every year. No doubt we had more pintails than mallards most of the season, just like the last couple seasons. Literally thousands of them flying over every day. Incredible how pit shy they are most of the time, but how incredibly dumb they are anytime your on a ditchbank or coffin or whatever. travis

We saw thousands this year and as most of you I really enjoy this bird. I am good also with the framework. For so long this bird declined in numbers and I hope they will make a LTA % that will blow all our minds. Because we see so many the guys I hunt with always take turns getting our bull. Don't try to shoot in big groups as to not hit the hens. Like you said Goosebruce, it is crazy how shy they are around a pit and they will land 10yrds in the field next to a irigation ditch. Now if they could find the exact culprit on the Lesser Scaup numbers, I know there are many factors stacked against them up north.

We saw lots of them this year. Hardly a hunt went by without each hunter getting one. I'm fine with the limit where it is now. It seems to be increasing the numbers why change it now?

I would think the reason we are starting to see so many is that efforts to increase their pop are working. I to love this bird and can't wait for the day when there numbers match that of say mallards.

i personally would like to see it go to atlest a 2/60 in the next few seasons v's a 1/60 like it is now. However a body is never really satisfied. I guess its in our nature. I am glad that they moved it toware we can shoot one everday of season.

We had WAY more pintails then mallards this year. I peronaly think the limit should be moved up so that they dont take breading habitat away from the mallards.

i think you should be required to kill 10 bootlips per day for the same reason.

now, say that out to check if it makes sense.............does it?

if memory serves me (which i can't promise), pintails are nefarious short grass nesters much different than most other dabblers which prefer taller, denser cover for nesting. pintails often nest a fair piece from water in sparser, less dense habitat, again, much different than the other dabblers such as mallards, gadwall, teal, etc etc.

but either way (same or different nesting habitat), again, say that out loud.
