Clover?

Postby CB » Sat Feb 16, 2008 7:16 pm

Want to plant a few fire lanes, short power line and a few roads. How would clover work and what kinds would recommend. I would prefer something that grows back each year with little maintenance. I have access to a small tractor and clipper but not allot of heavy ground breaking equipment. I could get it broken up once but every year would be asking allot. Any ideas, when to plant etc...

Thanks!

if you can't break the ground very well, clip it, then come back a week later and spray it..... this will help with any weed competition you will have. As far as varieties, Durana probably requires the least amount of maintenance, however, maintenance is a relative term. It will still require mowing, fertilizing, liming, etc..... Make sure your soil pH is somewhere around 6.5-7 (go get a soil sample and hit with a shot of lime now, then again when you plant). Also, bear in mind, that lime only alters the pH of the soil it touches, if you apply lime to the first 1/2" of the soil, that 1/2" is what will become "fixed". Also, your first year, don't hesitate to put a little wheat or brassicas in the clover when you plant just to give the plots a little green boost.
Sun rise in the east.... and it sets up in the West, yes the sun rise in east baby, and it sets up in the west..... It's hard to tell, hard to tell, hard to tell, which one, which one I love best.....
