HP question for boat?

I have a 14'40'' boat with .080" hull with no floor. I know that I need a bigger motor than what I have (9.5 Johnson) but I'm a poor duck hunter!
My question is this: I'm tired of working on my motor and want anouther one. I can get a brand new 8HP Mercury for $800. Is this going to be much slower than my 30yr old 9.5? Or should I try to get a larger but older motor? $800 is the max I could spend without a divorce!

Take 5 more minutes to get there and 5 more to get back with the new 8 hp. Don't mess with a used motor. I know some are ok but all the trouble and expense of duck hunting and your motor wont start is the pits! That Merc should be a good one to start in freezing temps if it is like my old one. It should push a 14 ft boat ok if not overloaded. Good luck INJ

I bet that new 8 will way outdo your old 9.5. I have a '50's model 5.5, it's about as fast as a 3 of today, maybe.

I just checked boatmotors.com, it looks like your $800.00 merc is the way to go.

The 8 merc is a good buy. It's sticker has $1100(its a 2002 new in box) but he'll sell it for $800 to me. I hunt on Sardis alot and occasionaly the wind picks up around noon and it can get pretty choppy on the way back. I hope this 8 will push 3 190lbs. men as good as the 9.5.

Buy the way, when should we learn about this season's dates and limits?

I agree, I'll bet a brand new 8 hp will smoke that old motor big time. Plus, that sounds like a great price for that motor. I'd jump on it. You can always sell the whole deal in another couple of years and get something bigger/faster if you want. Having that new motor on the back will really keep your value up for potential resales too.

According to what I've always been told, the horsepower of an outboard used to be rated at the motor. Now it is rated at the prop. So a new 8 horsepower is not the same as an old 8 horsepower. I dont know enough about it to tell you how to compare, but my guess is that the new 8 would be a good bit stronger than the old 9.5.

Like I said, I'm a broke duck hunter! But I love to hunt. I did it once last year with a 1230 john boat with a trolling motor on the back with 2 people in it. That wont ever happen again!

The New 8hp motor will definatly be better than the old 9.5hp.
But, you had better be careful as hell or you will end up a dead, broke duck hunter.

9.9 NISSAN...IT IS REALLY ITOTSU...*SPELLING*...

THE 9.9 AND THE OLE 15 AND 19 WERE ALL THE SAME MOTORS....JUST DIFFERENT THROTTLE /....THUS GET A 9,9 AND FOR ABOUT 30 BUCKS CHANGE IT TO HIGHER RPMS....19 HP..........DOES GREAT...WITH 3 AND DOG.........MOTOR WEIGHT...102....THAT IS WHY IT HAS BEEN CALLED FOR THE LAST 15 YEARS
