Dredging of the Tallahatchie River!
Re: Dredging of the Tallahatchie River!
All those green willows are dead from the water standing on them! All the resovoirs in No. Mississippi were built for flood control. That's why we need the pumping plant down here on the Yazoo. The channelization of all the waterways inbetween brings so much water down here so fast it can't get out. Then when you have another year like '72 and '73 when the reservoir got caught holding the water up bingo you have another flood on your hands! They can't hold this water up there for fishing because it will flood everything to the south during the spring!
Re: Dredging of the Tallahatchie River!
They need to dredge the river so more water can get downstream faster and flood teh south delta. People will be begging for the pumps by that time.

No, i don't want to know you ---- teul

BR549, so if yal get the pumps down there, up here can we have water during the spring to fish?

BR549 I don't know if you fish Sardis but it is filling up with silt which is caused by channeling the upper Little Tallahatchie. You might not need a pump on the Yazoo if the rivers upstream were allowed to meander and flood naturally depositing their silt in sloughs and wooded areas. I wish I knew more about the situation but it sounds like an environmental desaster in the making.
Re: Dredging of the Tallahatchie River!
Dredging and channelization isn't the root of the problem behind Sardis filling up with silt. Sediment should be addressed before it enters any body of water and kept on the ag fields where it belongs.

Agreed.

Dan. I'll second that! I do wish there were no more dredging till something is done to alluviate the water down here though. I know they have to somewhat keep some channels open but gee! You flush your toilet up there and we have to run to high ground down here!
And yes I was own Sardis, Enid, And Grenada this past year. They have filled in some, but the biggest majority of that is coming from just naturally having all that water over the ground. If they didn't fluctuate the resevoirs as much as they do, there would be nothing there but a bowl of water by now!

It seems to me that the majority of the folks wanting the dredging so that their low-lying land can be farmed are the ones that will disk up to the riverbank and all of the ditches and leave the drains wide open in their fields all winter. All of that silt goes right back into the river, and 20 years down the road they are crying "dredge, dredge"!
Simple soil conservation practices would go a long way.

If the Tallahatchie had been allowed to meander naturally above Sardis instead of putting the run off in a straightened ditch like blowing it through a pipe the silt would have been deposited in the bottoms before reaching the lake. The same problem will be caused down stream. With the dredging of the channel, water will reach the lower portions of the Yazoo basin before the river can handle the flow.
I had thought I didn't have a dog in this hunt but I have come to the conclusion that I do. My tax dollars are helping to pay for this. I have seen the Corps screw up too much already. The EPA needs to look into this and do it quickly.

It is truly one of those ridiculous corp. projects dreamed up by the corp. in order to justify its continued existance. Just think about it. If we were to convince those in power that rivers in Ms. and other states don't need to be turned into giant ag ditches that run as quick and fast as they possilbly can to the Ms. River and ultimately to the Gulf, more than half the employees at the corp. would lose their jobs.

In the early 90's the Coldwater flooded so bad that half of Marks was under water. I was pretty young, so I do not know exactly why, but everyone in Quitman Co. had stickers on there trucks that said "Save us from Mabus". Apparently, he wasn't helping.
I work for the COE, but I am outside of this argument because I am on the military construction side. We build buildings on military installations. I will bet everyone in Marks in the early 90's wished the Tallahatchie River would move a little faster.

That still doesn't have anything to do with your comment. If you weren't old enough to understand what it meant, them maybe you should figure it out before you start putting it out there. Those stickers were all over the state when he was the governor, and alot of people didn't like the way he was running things. Just like the way some people don't like any other elected official now days. It had nothing to do with the coldwater river, so maybe you should get the facts before you open you pie hole!
