Dredging of the Tallahatchie River!
I noticed the Corp. had worked up to Swan Lake dredging the Tallahatchie River.
Will the Dredging of the river be the Death of the Crowder area duck hunting?

I thought the "Corp" had learned their lesson about all this dredging. Dredging turns a river into a ditch. It allows silt to move down stream faster and fill in sloughs and wetlands. An organization was formed in Arkansas that put a stop to it on the Cache River thereby saving one of the most important waterfowl wintering grounds in the world.

Any chance this organization could mobilize their forces here in MS? That part of the NE delta is that last remaining area that is flood prone on a regular basis. In my limited opinion that area doesn't get good until it floods out.
Once it goes, it's gone.

The days when The Coldwater would run backwards b/c so much water was coming down the Tallahatchie I figure is a thing of the past. I am talking about water being out from Charleston to Marks. I hear folks tell me that hunted in that area years ago that they would literally have to hunt out of a boat for an entire season. Normally hunting fields and breaks by 4wheeler to boats.

Wildfowler believe it or not the organization was basically founded by one man named Rex Hancock. Sadly he passed away not long after his efforts had thwarted the massive machinery of the Corp of Engineers. The culmination of his work was the formation of the Cache River National Widlife Refuge. A state WMA in the northern part of the refuge area is named in his memory. His life was a testimony of what one man can do if he gets mad enough and man enough.
I don't live in the delta but it angers me to hear of the Corp reverting back to their bullying ways. I have had enough experience dealing with Uncle Sam to know you don't have to accept their answers for anything. Would someone explain a little better where this dredging is taking place? Who knows we might could get someones attention.

Re: Dredging of the Tallahatchie River!
they dredged the yalobousha river out a few years ago and it is stopped up once again. They only do half way jobs and leave. Before that happened the idiots thought they would drive an asphalt crusher across the long river bridge and repave some of the old road that was going to get flooded over and over again. The bridge fell in with the crusher on it. So what do they do? They strapped some c4 to it and blew it up. That event pretty much closed the bait shop down the road. Nobody understands what is going through their heads. They wont let the lakes fill up b/c they say it is for flood control and not recreation but none of the signs say grenada lake flood control area. They say grenada lake recreation area. I dont guess it is appealing to put flood control on there but it is not appealing to go to a beach without water either. Anyway thats enough. Later guys.

No.
They've done it before and they'll do it again.
And we write the check.

Re: Dredging of the Tallahatchie River!
I don't know if any of you fish Sardis Lake but years ago when I was young my grandfather would carry me crappie fishing there. We fished in green willows all over the upper part of the lake. Today those willows are dead from too much silt. The lake bed in the winter time looks like the surface of the moon. The corp dreged the Little Tallahachie a new straighter channel and it brings with it too much silt too fast. The old channel is still there and the problem could be fixed by putting more flow back into it.

Sounds like we all need to trap a bunch of Beavers later this year and put them in the river.
