Back to the subject matter. We usually kill a black duck or two each year, but don't see very many. Our 2007 Christmas Eve hunt limit consisted of a black, 3 pintails and a good mix of mallards, gadwalls, greenwing teal and widgeons. It made for quite a set of duck straps!

The truth is that what most people kill in this area that are thought to be black ducks, are actually Black duck/ Mallard cross'. When this occurs, the duck will get the white on the edges of the speculum, similar to Mottled ducks. Mottled ducks also aren't nearly as dark as black or a mallard/black hybrid. But the easiest way to tell is in the speculum. Purple or blue=black, where as a greenish tint will usually indicate that it is a mottled.

So, this one is more likely a Black Duck x Mallard cross?

That does look like the typical 50/50 mallard/black mix. Still a great trophy. If that one bred with another black duck, and so on... the mallard traits would fade. But chances are good that it would breed with a mallard next, if it wasn't dead of course. With traditional Black duck habitat deminishing in the north east, Black ducks are now crossing paths with mallards more. This has caused an influx of mallard/black hybrids. Since mallards and black ducks are so similar geneticly, a mix b/w the two doesn't result in their offspring being unable to breed, as is common with other duck hybrids (mallard/pintail etc...) When the black ducks cross paths with mallards, they will follow more traditional mallard migration paths further west than normal. Only way to tell if it isn't a 100% black duck is by looking at all the traits. If there isn't purple in the speculum, and there is white on the edges, then it probably has some mallard genetics. Yours does have the white on the speculum edges, but does have the green bill and darker body color of a black duck.

I remember my dad telling me that when he was a teen, him and some of his buddies went huntings and they each killed five of them. He says that they thougt they were just some dark mallards, and didnt think anything about it, so they breasted them and cooked them. Makes me sick when I think about him not getting one or two mounted, but it makes for a good story.
