Clay county

Postby KennyP » Thu Jan 24, 2008 5:50 pm

Anybody here hunt Clay? I reckon we've had our worst year ever on our lease along the Line Creek bottom. :(

I'm now looking for another lease or a Club in Clay or Oktibbeha counties.

Anybody that can help , I'd be very appreciative!! :)

Hunt Cedar Bluff area off Hebron Christian rd....line creek bottom.....there are good deer around but, I believe they are nocturnal....wondering if my neighbors are feeding corn.....if you do see a deer it is nervous as heck and always moving....all game cam pics are at night , none during daylight....moved cameras all over place trying to find daylight pics...never got em.

Jwayne....you have any luck hunting hardwoods this year? We've got 200 acres of hardwoods and hardly ever seen a buck in it and we plant several food plots also....what are your hunting set-ups where you hunt? Cutover...food plots....hardwoods....etc?? Thanks.

KennyP.... Sorry but I don't know anyone in Sun Creek...This year all the deer I killed were in the Hardwoods. But we have pines, small food plots, hardwoods, creek bottoms, and sage fields and I saw deer in all of them. Probably the most productive setup this year was a transition from Row Pines (tall) to a hardwood bottom, and a sage field with a hardwood fence row between the pines and the sage field. We had a small food plot (quarter acre) right in the middle of the transition. A creek begins here as well and becomes deep and wide pretty quick causing any deer that was coming from the pines or the sage field to come to this spot to cross over to the hardwoods. We did not see very many deer in food plots due to the acorn crop. I always seem to do best when ever you can get in some type of transition between features

Thanks for the info Jwayne....we have no bedding areas ...all hardwood along line creek....no pines....I do have some sage fields with a few little cedar thickets in the hills but, the sage fields are between the hills and the hardwood bottom and they used to come across the fields to the bottoms but, we walk in from the hills and go across the fields to get ot the hardwoods and then we have to walk thru the Hardwoods to get ot stands I hate this but, its the only access we have and I believe we have made the deer nocturnal because I know they are there....to much sign and good game pics, though all at night though.... I love the area wish had access from the other side of the creek, that would help a ton!

Weimhunter....very funny...lol....you let me hunt ya'lls place and I'll let ya'll hunt mine!

What time of year do ya'll see hard chasing in that area? I thought it was around 1st MZ season to Xmas.....havent seen any bucks chasing this year.

I'm gonna see about getting the fields enrolled in a pine program and maybe that will help us.

Merle...how come you don't hunt your 100 acres?

Jwayne...sounds like ya'll got lots of different edges to hunt....thats helps a lot....plus bedding cover.....we did see 3 bucks that were really nice coming thru the Hardwoods bird-dogging a does scent trail....but, neither presented a clear shot....we killed 1 good buck this year a 125 inch 8 pt 1st gun season.....thats it...we did kill 4 does...you gotta remember this is about 350 acres total....I think that is horrible....I feel like the surrounding area hunters took enough does that we should be ok on doe harvest.....we heard lots of shooting this year much more than years past. I don't know........ :?
