I pretty much use the same paper as you, but i stop at 400. Mainly because I do not have any 500 or finer grit paper. Then I use denim.

So far I have only used Tung oil for the finish, but I am wanting to try something different. I am always up for suggestions.

THe sound is not perfect, but it works. Ducks don't all sound alike, nor do they always sound perfect.

The 500-600 grit paper can be found at Lowe's/Home Depot. Not in the tool dept. where more of the industrial wood finishing sandpaper is, but rather in the paint department.

As for Tung Oil, it's a great protector of wood, but only provides a dull finish. Try getting some of the Crystal finish from HUT Products. It's around $10/bottle and should last for quite some time. You apply a small amount at a time, since you are applying pressure to "melt" the wax finish to the call with friction. Definitely provides the luster effect.

I make a few boxes and boat paddles fashioned after the late Neil Cost. Favorite for long boxes is Sitka Spruce and boxes yellow poplar. Slate pots with glass bottoms and hickory stirkers. My bow is made out of osage and ebony with osage limbs

Niel cost

Postby jdbuckshot » Thu Jan 24, 2008 8:00 am

I Know Niel cost Literally wrote the book on the box call. ive fashioned a few after his design, but i know my calls will never live up to that! most of my pots are Maple, cherry, cedar, walnut, then i use some figured woods on some. glass over glass or slate over glass, used to always used osage for strikers, but im out, mostly hickory now.

As far as bows go, i attemted two self bows in the spring, both broke, all i had was some crotch walnut in the shop, and it wasnt srtong enough for the bows. Gonna attempt again this summer though. Still got my Tillering rig set up. May try a one piece laminate long bow with a small sight window, and a slight recurve in the limbs. I may be PMing you for tips!
