Just caught this post. You guys have some great talent. Wish my callmaking attempts turned out that well in the beginning. Guess it took me a couple of years to find the sound I wanted.

The bow is AWESOME!! and the rifle is just tool cool, both being able to say, I made this would floor a lot of people.

Hey Dixieland,

Well, I did struggle a bit with the sound, but through trial and error - I believe I've got it about where I want it.

As with anything, there's one part I don't like and that is "rounding-out" the blank. Takes too long and it's just busywork. What type of tool do you use to expedite this process - 1/2" skew???

Duckter,
I round my blanks with a 1" roughing gouge. A lot of guys cut the shoulders off on a bandsaw first too.

I do "round of the shoulders" with my table saw to speed-up the process. 1" roughing gouge -hmmm...sounds like the ticket! Thanks.

Must be Lonnie's you're speaking of. You're right, he's pretty proud of his stuff for sure. Good prices on guns - and that's about it.

Maybe we should have a DIY section on the site....I have carved a few decoys and made a boat. I have always wanted to try call making. Creating the stuff yourself is addicting, and a grat way to spend the off season.

Great job on those calls "Leadsthebest." Love the shapes too. How are they sounding?

Regarding your final sanding, what grit paper are you going up to? I start with 60, 120,150,180,300 and then 500 grit. Finally, I buff with some old denim and it makes quite a difference. Finish is smooth and glossy. From there, I apply the Hut Crystal finish.
